| Tikkis Learning! YAYYYY!!!! Hello everyone!!! GREAT NEWS.. Tikki has leanred how to "down"!!! I am so excited!!! I taught her and she learned basically in one day, but she was trying since friday!.... Now she knows three commands: sit, fetch, and down. Just wanted to share the news on her progress.. Also wanted to know, how is it that you teach "come". I find this a very important command but am puzzled on how to teach her. Call her name and give her a treat when she comes? Your advice will be very helpful!!! Thanks, -Alexandra and Tikki |

| My husband uses hand signals in addition to saying the command. He will tell Chachi to sit and uses hand signal. Then he'll walk away with his hand out telling him to stay. Then when he gets to were he wants him to come he'll say come and use a signal again. He does this with ham pieces for treats so chachi can't wait for trick time.

| What a cute picture of your pup in the cup! Isn't it amazing how young they are able to learn these things and so easily! My dog knows the same commands plus roll and come. But she can be selective when she WANTS to come. I taught come along with fetch. When she brings the toy back make sure to say come as she's coming. And I tell her to sit before I throw the ball. I am working on wait. When I throw the ball I want her to wait for me to say go get it. She is more motivated with using her ball for her reward than a treat. It's her favorite! |

| We point to the ground and say "come HERE" to a certain spot. When he came, we used to praise him and give him a small treat (like a cheerio). We do it over and over and now he knows that when we say "come HERE" he'll come to whatever spot we are pointing to...its great! Also, for your dog's safety it's so important they know commands like that. Congrats on "down"!!! Sully can do many cute things, but not fetch! But we're working on it...slowly. (I can use all the advice on that one I can get!)

| I found I used my hands while saying the commands so I decided to think of a hand signal to go with each verbal command. It works great. Gus doesn't always come when I say to but he always does when I use both. I use the clicker method and would recommend it. It works great.

| Isn't it great how fast they can catch on to some commands? Just catch them doing an antic and train them to repeat it. LOL! Orinskye, Bodhi does the exact thing! Itspuppyluv, I do hand signals naturally, too. Hope to do hand signals w/o voice commands in future. Greenie flakes were a reward until he started gulping them. The rest ended up in the trash - not going to go THERE! When I use PupCorn as a reward to try to teach "Stay", Bodhi wants it so badly that he just loses control and lunges. I have to use the "toy of the moment" instead. Hubby just taught him "Give me ten!". We raise our palms up facing Bodhi, wiggle our fingers, and Bodhi jumps up and taps our palms. I suggested wiggling our fingers so Bodhi doesn't get it confused with the "Stay" command. There's also a much different tone used as well. "Give me ten!" is happy and perky. "Stay" is serious and a bit lower, but not so low as to be discipline sounding. I've learned that clapping along with praising is better than just praising because Bodhi's tail will REALLY get to wagging! |
