very nervous when in car My yorkie does not like riding in the car. She starts quivering immediately upon being put in the car. We take her occasionally on 60 mile trip to daughters house and she will tremble the entire time. I tried taking her on 1/2 mile trips to get her used to the car, but she will not stop trembling until she is out of the car. I just read of something I had never heard of before. Found it on the web. Supposed to be used instead of tranquilizers. Bach flower essence and flower essence therapy. Anybody have any experience with these? Any experience with tranquilizers? Thanks, Jackieo

Bach flower is a stress reliever and I know a lot of people who use it on their dogs and it works very well. Sounds like you need to start right at the beginning with introducing your dog to the car. First just let her sit with you on the back seat with no engine on just let her get used to the smell of the car etc, make it fun give her a treat. Do this a few times and gradually increase the time. Then let her sit in the car with the engine running but don't go anywhere so that she get's used to the engine noise. Do you have her in a crate in the car? As this makes them feel more secure. Just try very short journey's at first and reward her with a treat when you let her out. Make lot's of short car journey's with a lovely walk when you get there, that way she will quickly learn that a car ride isn't just assosiated with a visit to the vet but there maybe a pleasurable experience at the end of the journey. Give her lot's and lot's of praise. I would try this before the tranquiliser route. Also try the bach flower remedy. Hope this helps Sharon,Charley & Melody xx

Thanks to all, appreciate the input. I have tried putting her in he car while backing out of the garage and leaving the car in the driveway. I tried having her set in the front seat while I am doing something in the yard where she can look out the window and see me. She just does not like the car. I can tell when she is trembling with excitement. We leave her in her crate at home when we go to town for 4 or 5 hours. When we come home she gets super excited and is trembling then, but there is definite difference. When driving my wife or I will hold her and try to console her, nothing works. She gets rigid and is trembling the entire time while in the car. Putting her in the crate in the car does not seem to help. Will try the Bach flower essence as I do not care for prescription drugs. Thanks again, Jackieo
