| Potty Training I have a 15 week female yorkie that will not do her business outside. We walk everyday for about 2 or 3 miles, I will keep her outside for a good long time but she holds it until we get in the house. I have had her since she was 9 weeks old. She does pretty good on training pads, but still will squat where ever she is. I work 4 days a week and she is confined (6 x 8 ft area) for about 6 to 7 hours. She potties on both the pads and floor. Oh and did I mention she mostly hides while pooping. Its a little frustrating and have tried all sorts of things from my internet searches. Nothing has been successful. | Yorkies can be difficult to potty train. Good job keeping her roaming room limited when you leave for work. When you are home, keep the pad in close proximity to wherever she spends her time. Make sure you praise and reward with a small treat when she gets it right. Outdoors: puppies are often distracted outdoors and do not focus on doing their business. She may also be reluctant to pee and poop outdoors. My Max was that way. I really had to encourage him and praise him when he pottied outdoors. Hiding to poop: Teddy was shy about pooping when he was a pup. Try pretending like you aren't hovering and watching too closely. Praise profusely when she does it. Let her know how happy you are, as if she just performed the best trick ever. If she poops while you are away, that might be one of the reasons she is not peeing on the pad consistently. My pups do not like to go near a pad that has poop on it. If that is part of the problem, that might be a difficult challenge to overcome until she matures and can regulate her poops for before you leave for work, and for when you return. My pad trained boys naturally fell into a rhythm in which they can do their business morning and evening, and when they know the humans will be there to take care of it right away.

Thanks for replying - I have tried several options ... I tried the crate for all night but found she could not hold it for much longer than 2 hours so I then got a pet play pen and connected the play pen to her crate so she could get out and potty when she needed. That worked great!, but still found that with our without poop on the pads, she would not always go to the pads. I tried to make the area a bit smaller which helped, but once I let her out (I have a pad or two out in the main area) she will once in a while go to them (I praise profusely) but mostly will squat and pee right where she is. I have picked her up in the middle often and move her to the pads and tell her to "potty" here. I tried the play pen outside so she could roam and do her business but she just barks and whines 99% of the time, she has pooped once or twice and I again praise her .. but then once I move her back into the house she pees or poops on the floor. I have never had a dog that would not do their business outside. 6 weeks of training .. nothing seems to stick except doing it on the floor .. | |

| After the better part of a year trying to housebreak her, Piper is very good when I'm home--even waking me up to let her out. And though sometimes when I return home after work, house is pristine, other times it's a barn! I swear these little characters can be very obstinate and sometimes I think Piper purposely doesn't use pad, cuz she gets her little feisty little attitude "I don't want to and I don't have to and I won't!" After all, I'm the one who gets to go to work all night!! Routine when going out and when fed and consistency and big, big praise will all work in your favor, but it may take time! |

I did everything right or as was suggested when I first got her. She was 5 mo old. I tried it all. It has just been in the past 6 mo (she was 2 in Aug) that she acts like she may have been paying attention LOL She will go outside and inside. Inside she will make 3 or 4 tiny spots as if she just wants to show me she can! Such a little stinker! She wont use her pee pad anymore or very rarely and it is only poo when she does. I take her out every 2 hours !! But she can hold it all night! i know this because I am a very light sleeper and she dont move after we get in bed. |

| Do these stinkers realize if they drive us crazy and we end up institutionalized who will do the potty dance just because they peed on a pad! Max I think is way smarter than me... He just need to tinkle a drop to get those coveted cherrios! But I hate to disappoint since he did potty on the pad even though he was just outside! But everyday is better than the next, then I step in a puddle grrrr. |
