| Dubious about my girl's age Hello everyone, I just adopted a puppy and I'm unsure about her age. The people I adopted her from say she was born on April 30, which would make her 11 weeks old. However, they provided me with little paperwork and there are several reasons this seems a bit dubious to me. The whole thing may seem a little sketchy (it was in Miami so that goes without saying). However, I fell in love with her when I met her and they sold her to me for a low price, saying they were both working full time and could no longer properly care for her. Firstly, she's already completely pee pad trained (which I am very thankful for). Secondly, she weighs 3.6 pounds and a few of the hairs on her face already seems to be turning from gold to silver. Her coloring seems to indicate the proper AKC guidelines though. The sellers provided me with little documentation. A certificate of vaccination at 4 weeks old, but her weight is listed as 3 pounds (seems a bit much for a Yorkie), with no doctor listed. I do plan on bringing her to the doctor. Finally, there was her mother's records showing her as being 3 pounds at 19 weeks old. I'm thinking the sellers were trying to sell her as being younger than she is or had no clue of her age. I plan on bringing her to the vet this week, so hopefully that will answer my questions, but I've been reading this forum for a while and thought someone could provide some feedback. |

| If her hair is changing she is older than11 weeks. They only change you would see at that age is the top of the head turning a white color that will then later turn to tan

| Vaccinated at 4 weeks old and 3 lbs already at that point? One source has her at 11 weeks and another weighing in at 3 lbs at 19 weeks old. I can see why you are suspicious. That's all over the place! They shouldn't be vaccinated at 4 weeks, since they are still getting immunity from momma's milk. I would tend to wonder if that's a faked certificate (given all of the conflicting information) and she hasn't been vaccinated at all, and the vet probably won't accept that certificate anyway. The vet will probably have a good idea of her age from looking at her teeth. I would not expect your vet to know specific things that a Yorkie owner knows (like the helpful tip that Chachi posted above re coat change vs age). There are just too many breeds out there for a vet to be familiar with the intricacies of every breed, especially those like Yorkies that have changes in coat as they grow.

| Very strange and a little scary. I hope she wasn't stolen? Hate to bring that up but is it possible? If you can post a photo we may be able to give you an idea of age but weight doesn't tell much. |

| Welcome to Yorkietalk. It does sound like something fishy is going on. Can you please share pictures of her? Do you still have the contact information on the people you got her from? I would call them and ask more questions. If she was vaccinated that young and has not had anymore vaccinations then she is not protected so make sure you don't let her around where other dogs have been until she is fully vaccinate.

| Your picture didn't attach. It sounds like she's older than you were told. Your vet will be able to give you a guesstimate based on her teeth.

| Awwww, she is a cutie. She does look a few weeks older than that to me but it is really hard to tell just from the picture. Hopefully the vet will give you a better idea.

| She is adorable. I too would have the vet look at her teeth and maybe give you a better idea. At nine weeks she should still have her baby teeth all there.

I attach a pic of Crystal at 20 weeks, on the day we picked her up, complete with lots of sawdust! Her coat was essentially black, but the head was going blonde. She weighed in then at just under 5lbs and today is a little under 8, at 18 months. I think the birthday for yours may be a month or so out (older) and perhaps the papers do not relate to your dag? A bit worrying, as scammers over here are well known to supply false vaccination certificates. Also to be 'jabbed' at 4 weeks seems very dodgy for any Vet to carry out? We had Crystal checked over and our Vet confirmed her age from the teeth and the papers through the original practice, who'd carried out the vaccination and knew the litter and the breeders. Crystal was almost pad trained, but became neglected, when her elderly owner had a stroke and the old ladies 'carers' shut this puppy outside 24/7 to live in a 'tea-chest'. Fortunately it was spring at that juncture of her life, so the worse of the cold nights were over. Now she's absolutely ruined! A really handsome girl, you have there by the way... | |
