| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. It would be unusual for a 4 month old to have collapsed trachea unless it is a genetic defect, or the pup suffered neck/throat trauma, or the pup had some sort of illness to damage the throat. Has the vet examined your pup? I believe that CT is diagnosed through x-rays. Maybe someone will correct me. Here is a link with videos demonstrating the difference between kennel cough, CT, and reverse sneezing (common in Yorkies): http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...d-trachea.html Collapsed trachea can be managed successfully depending on the severity of the case: keeping the pet's weight down helps, keeping the pet from overheating, and keeping the pet from becoming overly excited or physically exerted. Keep us posted on what you learn. Hoping your pup does not have CT.

| One more note: always use a harness for leashing your pup, never a collar.

| While it usually shows up in older pups, I have seen/heard of puppies with symptomatic cases of tracheal collapse. Collapsed trachea can be present without symptoms. While not proven, it is suspected to be genetic in origin. It is a condition of weakened rings of cartilage in the trachea. Contrary to belief, leash walking with a collar is not the cause but can be a terrible stress on the trachea. If your puppy pulls when walking, be sure he is wearing a harness. It can be diagnosed by xrays but it is not always evident on them. It if shows in the xray then it is considered diagnostic; but if it does not show and there are symptoms, a flouroscopy can be done. That shows the inspiration and expiration in real time and a diagnosis can be made. It sounds like your vet is guessing this based on what you have told him/her. If you think this is CT I strongly suggest you find out by diagnostic testing since it would be important to know since your puppy is symptomatic. He may need medications.

| What symptoms is your puppy having? Is this in and out heavy breathing? Or is it only coughing a lot?

| Keylo has it and since I got her as a puppy. is she honking...? you can youtube it to hear the difference between reverse sneezing and honking. if you rub up under your dogs neck and its stops after a few passes that's ct. they test it by palpitating the area at least the two vet I have seen. let me know if I can help any further.

It does not always show during an exam because it all depends on whether the collapse is in the cervical or thoracic area.

| it does....at least it helps keylo...maybe i use the wrong word it doesnt stop but helps regain control of the collapse if you will at least in keylo. it helps for us and gives me time to get her heart back under less distress.

I have a senior pup with a severely collapsed trachea and he rarely has symptoms. I have had others with horrible symptoms. Each case is very different.

| Hi, I haven't had tests done yet the vet said as long as he is eating and drinking OK and not losing weight it was OK. I only notice him doing it if he gets excited when he first gets around another dog,and when he would chase my mop when I was trying to clean the floor. I think I would like to get the tests done at some point though. I told the vet that the noise he makes is like he is trying to bring something up out of his throat,at first I thought he was going to throw up. I feel bad when he does this getting excited around dogs, but I would like him to see other dogs. Thanks for all of your replies! |
