| Marking territory??? My yorkie "Kobi" just turned 3 months on the 1st. He has been going around heisting his leg while peeing. Is it too early for him to be "marking his territory"? Why is he doing this?

| All male dogs lift their leg when they pee he is just young to be starting it. I doubt he is marking they usually start that later on

| Max was an early leg lifter. I agree with Chachi, I doubt your pup is marking territory so early. Which potty training method do you use? Outdoors or piddle pads or both?

| My little guy starting lifting his leg at around 3mos and then shortly after (maybe 4mos) started marking. So, it may be possible. |

| This is all new to me, my first puppy. So is there a difference in marking & just peeing? I just let him use the pad for now because I've read they shouldn't go outside until 2 weeks after ALL of their vaccinations. Is that true?

| Gunner did the same thing at that age. Now I keep belly bands on him.

Limit his freedom to a smallish area with the pad within easy reach. Supervise. When he uses the pad correctly, lavish him with praise and give him a small reward like a piece of kibble. If you catch him hiking his leg elsewhere, don't get angry. You can say No!, but I would go with "Uh oh" and then bring him to the pad and remind him that it is the place to go potty. Being upset will often make a puppy want to hide to got potty. Be sure to clean up the accident spots with an enzyme cleaner to remove the scent that may attract him to return and hit the spot again. It is possible for a puppy to start marking -- anything is possible. It's hard to explain the difference. Usually marking would be a small dribble, but sometimes they will let their whole bladder go. For instance, someone else posted that her pup went to her bedroom and chose to pee on her husband's pillow. The dog was marking his human's spot.

| I didn't get his belly bands till I knew for sure he was marking. I just bought some really nice ones from member kjc, very well made. They are a piece of material that goes around the penis and velcros over the back, you put a mini pad inside it. Gunner has several.

| Hmmm so it definitely seems as he's marking because it's little drizzles like by my kids room door and he's even done mine but mostly my daughters door. If he's not allowed into the room where they are he will do it.

| That sounds like it could be marking. Or, is he really excited when he does it? Is he pawing at the door or jumping up and down? Excitement in a puppy can create the urge to pee.

| I'm a huge fan of belly bands till they are completely housetrained. Gunner is doing very well unless it rains. He will go to the door for me to let him out. I take off the band, he goes out and does his business, then he comes back in and the band goes on before he gets his treat. Sure does save the floors and doors.

YT 1000 Club Member | We cheer, clap our hands, and hand out a treat when we see a male Puppy lift his leg for the first time (hopefully outside). I look at it as being the first step to being a real Dog !
