| My Benny needs a friend/advice needed Hello all, My benny is a 2 year old Yorkie. Full of energy, super friendly, and always wants to play. My wife and I both work full time jobs, and are generally gone Mon-Fri 9-5. I cant help but think Benny is likely bored out of his mind throughout the day, and would hate for him to one day get depressed. I know he hates it when we leave, as I find his treat dispensers full when we get home, as if he hasnt even touched them. But soon as we get home, he picks it up, and goes after the treats. Bringing in another dog is out of the question as we also have an toddler son, and our budget is tight. Does anyone recommend any other type of pet, or activity we can leave Benny, so he doesnt get lonely during the day? |

| I guess you or your wife can't come home for lunch to take him out for a quick walk? Have you tried leaving the tv/radio on while you're gone? What sort of treat dispenser have you tried? You said he's 2 years old. Then I think he's used to the routine you have by now. Most likely, he just sleeps while you're gone. Hopefully, either you or your wife have some energy left after work and taking care of your child to have a playtime with Benny as well. |

| Believe me, we play with him, and he seems pretty beat once its time to go to bed. I make it a point to have time for both my kids once we get home. We both have a relatively long commute to and from, so a quick lunch time trip wouldnt work. I think its mostly just me worrying over nothing. I see most people here with yorkies tend to have 2, or more, or work from home, etc. But you are right, I would assume he is used to it. Ive heard about the tv/radio, and might give that a try. |

| we both have a some what long commute, so coming home for a quick lunch walk is out of the question. Oh we play with Benny alright. I make it a point to play with both of my children as much as possible. He is usually tired at the end of the day, and will sleep all night. I guess perhaps I worry for nothing, just would hate him getting depressed. But you are probably right, by now I assume he is used to it. I will give the tv/radio a try. Does anyone else do this? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am home all day with my 3 and they sleep most of the time. I see you live in Skokie I use to live there. Outside activity isn't really much of an option right now. Once the weather gets better, long walks help cut down on the boredom.

YT 1000 Club Member | Greetings Mecuadorian welcome to the Forum. My first thought would to get him a companion. (Same breed, opposite sex, younger animal) But, you say no on that, so... Many of our animals are so people orientated, they just don't do well when alone, however... I furnish a preponderance of toys, Allow my guys to access windows, where they can look out and "object" to things happing in "their" territory. Allow large area access (full house & doggy door to outside). Hope this will help.

| I agree that he probably sleeps most of the time you're gone--mine do that and then have lots of energy to expend in the early evening. When we're going to be gone for a few hours on weekends (I'm usually with them during the week), we might leave the tv on a "safe" channel. If it's Animal Planet, we leave the screen on because our cat and one of the yorkies like to watch the animals. Sometimes we may leave just the sound on or a radio at a low volume, making sure that alarming noises won't be included in the programming. (Piper freaks out if suspenseful music is used in the background of a tv show or movie.) A lot of tv's can be programmed to only stay on for a given period of time, which might be useful. My mom has yorkies, as well, and also owns a cockatiel. The dogs don't physically interact with the bird, but they all like watching each other and compete to be the best security guards and noisy commentators on household activities. As mentioned, toys and sometimes a strategic treat dispenser can help. I really can't think of much else since my experience has been the potato chip syndrome: can't have just one yorkie. Good luck!

| Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will give the tv/radio a try. I always see most members have more then 1 yorkie. I honestly would like to eventually get another, but the timing right now isnt great. And the weather here in IL has been terrible this winter. But again, maybe its just me worrying over nothing, as I tend to do. Love my boys! |
