| Dry skin... Since I remember my baby has had dry/itchy skin. Not until about 3 months ago did I notice that his skin was also flakey. I've come across a lot of post talking about food allergies that might cause itchy skin, so after that I decide that I should change his food to a simple diet (blue buffalo) to reduce the risk of food allergies. He's been on this food for about 3 months and I got to say that I don't see him itch/scratch as much as he used to. I feel like this food slightly reduced his itchiness but he's still pretty flakey and his skin just looks dry and wrinkly. My question now is, is there a specific shampoo and condition anyone out there has used that has cured your babies itchiness and flakes. I once used an oatmeal shampoo cause I heard that was good for itchy skin, but surprisingly he began to flake 5x's worse then he normally did. Or is there a spray or something that someone uses to moisturizers their babies skin that work? Someone please help! This has been going for a while now and I don't like! |

| We use Minksheen by touchofmink.com and so happy with it we have never tried anything else- so not much help there. (We do use biogroom fluffy puppy for faces because it does say tearless...) I do spend more time rinsing than washing and when I am done rinsing I rinse one more time! Any shampoo left will really dry their skin and wiggly puppys are hard to rinse! |

| Pups that are sensitive to grains can have a negative reaction to oatmeal. How Often Should You Bathe Your Pet? Also avoid shampoos that include oatmeal. Oatmeal has a great reputation as a soothing ingredient, but in animals that have a problem with grain (which is 80 percent plus of allergic dogs!) they are likely to have problems with oatmeal shampoos. Grain-based shampoos may also provide a carbohydrate food source for unwanted yeast and bacteria. The only pets that truly benefit from oatmeal shampoos are those that have poison oak or poison ivy reactions. Do you use a conditioner? A good conditioner is great for keeping their hair & skin soft. This thread has a slideshow of skin problems in dogs, maybe it will help, as you'll want to rule out any medical issues. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...lems-dogs.html

MinkSheen is great, but ever since I read that the Mink is inhumanely treated, just to get their oil, I stopped using it. Plus, I'd rather use an all natural product on my doggies.

| The slideshow was very helpful. Thank you! I am glad to say that his condition is not as severe as some of the pictures on the slideshow lol. His condition is pretty mild. Well the shampoo I use mentions on the label that it conditions the coat. Maybe the solution could be as simple as getting a separate conditioner for him. |

| While trying different shampoos and conditioners can help, I would also look to treating internally. Perhaps add some oils to the food. I give Mandie some fish oils a few times a week. I also brush her teeth with coconut oil and rub a little on her tummy.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I had a poodle with very dry skin. I put her on a venison diet (derm dr. recommended this) and she cleared up. If your dog is still itching try the venison diet. For shampoo my vet sells Hy-lyte shampoo. The espree is good also. I use the Hy-lyte and another hypoallergenic conditioner. I do hope this helps. No table food, treats or anything else. Just venison and see if that helps. A lot of times it is the food. My sisters dog was on Costco Kirkland dog food. Bad ear infections. Switched to Wellness food, it cleared up. So watch the food. |

| Using a separate conditioner is important, but experiment with how long you leave it on. It will condition the hair and the skin. You may have to change the time in between baths to find what's optimum for your dog. Coconut oil based products are good, as CO is excellent for hair and skin, inside and out, and teeth too!

| I spritz emu oil every day for my two. I don't bathe them more than once a month but I do wipe them down at least twice a day with baby wipes. I'd do the fish oil in their food but they won't touch it if I put any of it. -_- I check often to see if there are any flakes and I haven't noticed them scratching a lot either since I've used the emu oil. |

| My boys are in full coat and they are active outdoors, so I have to bathe them every 7 to 10 days. Bathing isn't necessarily drying. It also helps remove dead skin cells. We normally use an Oatmeal shampoo and Teddy was really drying out and becoming itchy. I switched shampoos and he has cleared up. We have used it twice: Isle of Dogs Royal Jelly. We followed up with our regular conditioner. I also give Espree products a thumbs up. Chris Christensen is another good brand, although the scent is too much for sensitive nose.
