Default New Yorkie Parents

My husband and I adopted/bought 2 Yorkie litter mates, a boy (Toby) and his sister (Sophie) our first dogs. We didn't know anything about raising puppies or about Yorkshires. However, as soon as we got them, I started reading about the breed to be a good mom to them, after reading about how to raise two puppies, I realized that raising litter mates would be a lot of work.
Well...it all started when I saw a lady walking her Yorkie puppy and I started asking questions about her lovely puppy, then she told me that the person she got her puppy from had another litter and she could get us a puppy.
Well, we end up with two because the lady's sister didn't want the girl she ordered, she changed her mind and wanted a boy instead. So the lady brought the girl with her when she came to bring us our puppy, and asked if we wanted the girl too. We thought it would be good to get both to keep each other company. Yes...we were not thinking and acted on impulse.

We knew nothing about the breeder, never met them since they live in Bakersfield, but the lady we met offered to pick up our puppy at the same time she picked her sister's puppy, we just told her we wanted a boy. So to make a long story short, she went and got us the puppy we wanted, and since we were not involved getting the puppy we end up with the runt (Toby)
After a week of having them, we realized that it was going to be lots of work, not only were they young (6 1/2) week old, but we never had puppies before. However, all I can say is.....yes we did everything wrong, but since we got them (9/1/13) we have done a lot of reading because we decided that we were going to learn as much about how to best raise our puppies. It is a lot of work but so far they are doing good, our girl is very smart, which teaches the boy. We love them so much and we are doing our best to be good parents and responsible dog owners. We continue learning as much as we can, and they are a joy to us. So any advise you can share and give us, will be appreciated.

Hi there and welcome to YT! Yeah, you jumped in with both feet, huh?

Am I reading right and you got these babies in September? As you know from your readings, 6 1/2 weeks is way too young to separate these littles from the Mama. You are very blessed that they are both doing well. So, now they are about 5 months old right?

I honestly don't have any advice for you. In all honesty, with them being so young when you got them, it was probably a good thing that you got 2 from the same litter. They probably helped each other learn some social skills (like not to bite too hard).

Please post pics when you can. Would love to see Toby and Sophie!

Congrats on being new yorkie parents! When I got my pups it was my first time as well so I know how difficult of an adjustment it can be as a first time puppy mom especially with two at the same time! I think you've already passed the most difficult time period. With both of my pups, I found the first few weeks to be the most difficult. Don't worry about having a "runt" I have one too, on purpose and she is a doll! My advice would be not to overindulge them. We had my oldest pup first and she was very spoiled and we gave in whenever she whined. My youngest pup was also spoiled but we did not give in whenever she whined and she is more obedient than her older sister. Also make sure that you put them on a high quality dog food if they are not on one already. Grooming is also very important, make sure to brush their teeth, clean their ears and make sure that they get all of their shots. You may also want to take a pet cpr class and learn the doggie heimlich maneuver. I've never had to do cpr on my pups but let me tell you that if you ever experience a choking incident with one of your pups it is the scariest thing in the world! Also, I wouldn't leave them with any chew toys while they are not supervised. I've heard so many horror stories about greenies and raw hide. I only let my girls chew on bully sticks and I supervise them when they have them. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Default Thank you for your feedback.

Well, the first thing I did once I got them was to take them to the Vet to make sure they were healthy and schedule for the first vaccination at 8 weeks old, then once I got all the info I could about raising Yorkies we got them on good food and try our best to not spoil them not too much, that's the hard part.
I have a son 22 and he loves them so he helps a lot caring for them, I am blessed to live in the same building where I work, so it makes it easier to always be checking on them, we have spend so much to make sure they are care for in the best way possible, they will soon be fixed too.
It has been a little extra work, but with my husband and son's help is hasn't been horrible. They already know the "come" command, sit, down and up, but we will enroll them in classes. We take them places to socialize them and started taking them to puppy play time at Pet smart, we don't know the breeder I wish I knew who they were to turn them in, now that I am beginning to think they probably breed them for profit.
We are blessed with this two very loving dogs, so far they are healthy and we have done our best to make sure we do what is good for them, with exception of the spoiling them part, that is hard but we try our best
They are a joy to have!

Yes we had the same thing happen with the Quando chew treats, didn't even know Sophie had swallow a chunk, but I knew something was wrong because she didn't want to eat. Then I realized what happened when she somehow spitted out the next day after letting a yelp out, thank goodness. I don't give them those chews anymore, learning from mistakes the good thing is she is ok. That's why I join this forum to learn from other Yorkie owners.

Welcome to YT! Your babies are adorable! As others have said, you have gotten through the worst part already with getting them so young. Since you don't know what kind of bloodlines they have come from, I would recommend getting insurance that covers breed specific problems that are not preexisting. (LP, liver shunt, etc.) Now while they are still so young is a great time since they are healthy. If something ever does crop up, insurance could be a lifesaver, financially. You pay up front, but it reimburses you. There are several threads concerning insurance that are active right now. Again, welcome & congrats!

Welcome! I am so glad you took the decision to get both of them seriously. It looks like you did your research to make sure they had the best start in life. They are both adorable. You won't regret getting them both. Congratulations!
