| Eating stuff off the ground while running Hi, We have a problem with Rufus. Every time that we let him loose, he starts running like crazy. But, when he runs he tends to grab stuff off the ground and eats it!! We hear him choking because he keeps on running, he even hits his muzzle on the ground trying to grab stuff!! He grabs everything from grass to feathers to even poop!! I try to stop him but he runs so fast that I can't catch up with him. When he is loose he listens very well, he comes to me when I call him but when I tell him to drop it he just keeps on running and grabbing stuff.. I don't want to keep him on the leash all the time but I don't want him getting sick either.. Any suggestions on how to handle this?

| It sounds like you need to do some one on one training… start in your house with a toy or something- tell him to drop it, when he does reward him. Do this a couple times a day.. Then you can walk him on a leash when he picks something up tell him to drop it and reward him. If you work with him/teach him he will get it!

| Sounds like he needs to be on a leash so you can control him eating things outside is dangerous and if it keeps up even on a leash he needs a muzzle untill he gets the idea he cant do it

| When he is on the leash he behaves and doesn't eat anything. Just smell around. But, when he is loose, he starts running like crazy and then he starts grabbing stuff of the ground

| I would not put a muzzle on him. A muzzle is not a training tool. A muzzle will not teach him anything. When he is loose, is he outside? When outside, you should always have the leash on especially if you are training him not to pick up things. You will have to work with him when you are inside as well… make sure you puppy proof your house, then leave something on the ground that would be safe for him to grab, but something you do not want him to have… When he grabs it, tell him Drop it. When he drops it reward him. You will have to do this consistent to teach him to “drop” things that he shouldn't have.

| Leash him and train him to walk by your side - it will give you more control over this problem and a safer dog. A dog running off leash is a danger to himself and to others. Just use the loose leash method. Anytime the leash is loose he moves forward but if he pulls or crosses in front of you, you stop until the leash isn't being pulled anymore, at which time you go forward again. In time he'll learn what gets him going forward consistently is not pulling or crossing in front of you and he'll trot along beside you to keep moving forward.

| When Rufus is inside the house he behaves, doesn't pick up things. When we are outside I walk them both on the leash and from the beginning I trained both to walk besides me. I only let them loose when we are at the park and when no other dogs are around. When I let him run in the park, that's when the problem starts. I think it's when he gets exited and then he starts picking up stuff (while running)

I will continue training with him. For now I'll keep him on the leash. When I'm confident enough that he will listen I'll try letting him run around
