| Help? Is my babygirl a yorkie or silky terrier? I have a purebred yorkie girl. She is just turning 1year old. Iv had her from a puppy yet recently alot of people are stopping me to ask me what breed she is crossed with and generally look at me with dis belief when i say she is just a yorkie. I am starting to wonder if maybe the breeder informed me wrong and if she is infact full yorkie, full silky terrier or maybe a mix of both. If you have time could you please take a look at my album called roxy at 1 year old and please let me know if you have an opinion. I wouldnt change her for the world she is my baby im asking out of curiosity as i am questioned alot. Many thanks |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Your baby girl looks 100% Yorkie. I think people who ask are not as familiar with the breed, or they have seen one look on a Yorkie. People in my area are accustomed to Yorkies with puppy cuts who are small and nicely plump. They see my big boys in long hair and think they are Silky Terriers.

| She looks yorkie to me but I am no expert. Maybe Carmen will see this she can usually tell with one look. I know we get asked alot if Laddy is part silky and being where he came from it is entirely possible but I love him just like he is. Welcome to YT hope you get your answers soon.

| Thank you for your replies :-) im glad to hear someone elses encounter as i was quite disheartened as iv had people saying she should be all black and tan, yet from info i have looked up myself i gather they change colour until around 2 years old. And my girl is black, tan, gold, grey and white at the moment and has been for the last 4-5 months. And i was told she started changing colour too early as the top of her head had white/grey roots at just under 3 months old. She is 10 and a half inches high to the shoulders and 12 and a half inches long weighing 7 and a half pounds. |

| Roxy looks a lot like my Abby, who is an AKC yorkie with a lot of silky terrier attributes. I have been thru the posts and info from Carmen (Thanks again!) and even tho Abby is "only" 7 lbs and very petite the biggest things that seem different about her are the shape and size of her feet and nails (cat like) The way her ears stand up at the base. The length and shape of her body- especially hips and tail joint. A difference in the shape of her forehead, snout (pointy-er). And of course attitude- the sweetest, easy going pup in the whole world! |

| Many thanks to everyone! I have read that a yorkies height to shoulders and length should be the same. My roxys height is 10 1/2 inches and length is 12 1/2 inches. Corresponding with what iv read saying thats a silky terrier attribute. She is so loving and loyal and full off energy. I would describe her as half a lap dog half an energetic marathon runner hehe. Also i have been looking through pictures of yorkies and silky terriers and my roxys ears seem to be the same as a silkys. Again i wouldnt change her for the world im so curious after having the seed of doubt put in my head. Her vet also said she is one of the most sturdily built yorkies she has seen for a while which also made me think maybe she is part silky as they have longer backs and tend to seem more 'built' if that makes sence. And all your yorkies are just adorable :-) |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Hi, I'm a new yorkie owner and I wanted to comment on your post. I get the same questions. Everyone is always asking me what breed she is and when I say she is a yorkie, they look at me like yeah right, okay. I even have had people ask me what she is mixed with and when I say nothing, they give me the same look. I know my baby girl is 100% yorkie! It does get frustrating, but maybe since people are mixing dog breeds they think every dog is mixed. |

Not every Yorkie is going to conform to the standard perfectly and that is why some are "pet quality" and some are show dogs. The only way to know exactly what bloodlines are in a dog is to trace the dog's lineage way back, as excellent dog breeders do.

| She looks totally Yorkie to me. I don't know why people feel the need to comment on other people's dogs like that. Most of them have no idea what they are talking about. Maybe the fact that she has a tail throws them off? If you Google images of a Silky you will see some of the real differences in the two breeds. Most amateurs would not have a clue. People watch that Dogs 101 show and suddenly become experts in all things dogs. People here on YT have said they have Yorkies that are over 18lbs so size in certainly not a deciding factor. Your little one is adorable. Oh, I see your in the UK so the tail thing can't be the issue. Just ignore them. Last edited by gracielove; 03-04-2013 at 12:38 PM. |
