Default Have you ever snuck your Yorkie into a "no pets" motel?

My daughter will be attending college this fall in a small town that only has 2 decent motels but both are "no pets allowed" motels. The motels in town that do allow pets are so gross that I wouldn't even allow my little Roxi to spend a night in them.

Now my Roxi is only 2 lbs 14 oz so she would be really easy to sneak in. I usually leave her with my mom, but mom wants to go with me when I go to visit my daughter. I really have no one else I trust to take care of Roxi, especially because she does have liver disease and she's so small.

Have any of you ever snuck your dog in and did you get away with it? I do worry about her barking, but I think the TV would drown that out. I would welcome any suggestions you guys might have.

Yes....nearly the first weekend we had him. I had to take a board exam up in PHX and one of Hubbies buddies works for a hotel up there, no pets. So I snuck him in my tote and we packed his pads and travel bowls. He was super good.

He watched TV with his Daddy while I studied, he played quietly with toys, slept in the awesome king size bed with us. Fun weekend.

I wouldn't do it out of respect of the person or entity who owns the property. Since they bought & paid for the property & rights, carry the liability insurance, pay the taxes, employ the workers, and are fully responsible for what happens there, etc., they have the right to say who they want in their rooms & on their property. I try to personalize decisions like this, for instance if I owned & operated a business, I would want those who patronized it to either respect my rules of running my business or find another. Like the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated.

That's what hubby said after. In the fall when I go up for another exam, we are getting our own room at a pet friendly place.

Hehehe.....not saying I wouldn't be tempted though - but in the long run, I couldn't do it.

Agreed. Hubby didn't' want to tell him we'd pass on the room as he was kind enough to get us a very nice large one for cheap. He told him about Oliver and he said, no worries, he works as security there.

I've already looked at pet friendly places near the civic center where I take my next exam.

I have never snuck a dog in a hotel that didn't allow pets, but have snuck them in places that allow pets to avoid the high fees they sometimes charge. I mean seriously, $25 and up for a 5 or 6lb. dog. Something to consider if you get caught, they sometimes charge a big fee or kick you out which wouldn't be fun

The policy where I like to stay is if you do get caught with a pet, it's a $250 fine. I just don't know what to do because I'm so OCD about germs and the pet friendly hotels in this college town are just so gross. There is one hotel next door to the Holiday Inn that allows pets that doesn't look too bad from the outside. On my next visit, I might just go next door and see if they'll let me take a look at the rooms to see what they are like. I usually check TripAdvisor for reviews...this hotel got mixed reviews.

I've done it a few times... but then again I also had a friend at the front desk who knew we were doing it. She just couldn't get us a pet friendly room and we didn't want to pay for it either. It would've been her fault for letting us do it anyways if we got caught... :P

We will be driving 22 hours for my move at the end of the summer, and if we can't find a pet friendly hotel we will be doing it again. Harley has an xpen with a floor in it so there really is no risk of anything happening other than getting caught. Harley doesn't bark much so with a doggie carry purse, it's simple.
And we will be arriving late and leaving early...

If my dog caused damage I would pay for it though, without hesitating.

We did it because we weren't thinking clearly when we got her and forgot we were taking S1 to a college football camp 2-3 hours away. We took her cage with us and we didn't leave her alone either. We were mainly there at bedtime so she spent little time out of her cage. She didn't sleep in the bed because we always have her sleep in her own space (crate). I didn't think it was a big deal because she doesn't shed and was so tiny and barely on the carpet or bed. Now, it would be harder and I'd feel more guilty. BUT, she still doesn't shed and I'd probably bathe her before we went somewhere. So, YES I would sneak her in. You just can't leave her alone because she might cry or bark.

We even took her to watch my son work out in the afternoon the football camp. She hung out in the stadium with us and we ate lunch outside at a fast food place. I did stay with her in the hotel while hubby took son to the morning session.

I would look into pet friendly motels, instead of sneaking her in, the cleaning ladies always come in once a day or so, and your dog could run out, or they may see her. I would not ever leave her alone either. And if caught you may be fined, as it was mentioned before. When we went to Disneyland we did find a pet friendly motel, but they had a set of rules, such as the cleaning lady does not go into the room, and the dog had places that were off limits. Disneyland has its own boarding kennels too, but I chose to keep the dogs home and have my brother care for them.

I have done it a bunch of times and don't feel a bit bad, Lola is always bathed before we go anywhere and sleeps in her own bed, I would venture to say she is cleaner than some of these yahoos I see checking into the motels. I also am disgusted by some of the ratty blankets they have, I can not imagine she would make them any worse. In fact if driving I now pack my own blanket and always pack my own pillow. She is 100% potty trained and never has an accident. I only bring her if we are just overnighting or will be able to bring her everywhere we go. She is not a barker but I would be afraid that if left alone in strange place she would, I would also not want to take a chance that someone would come in the room and she would get out or be stolen. I think it is a crock about the pet fees they charge, it's hard to believe they do extra cleaning for a pet, because I am often appalled by the condition the rooms are left in when we check in, moldy shower curtains, dust and junk left under the bed, in the corners of the bathroom, etc. The places that I am talking about are like Hampton Inn, Best Western, Comfort Inn, even Holiday Inn Express.
