YorkieTalk Newbie! | New Yorkie Owner Hello Yorkie Talk, I am a new first time pet owner and I choose a Yorkie as my first pet. I really did not no what I was getting into but as of right now I love my Yorkie (Iris) so much. She is such a bundle of joy, but she is so hard headed. I have had many many issues with her and it seems like I am stuck in a pickle. I welcomed Iris into my life on March 26, 2012 and at first everything went well and than a week or two after she got really sick. My boyfriend forgot to watch her and let her eat something really bad which made her throw up like crazy and she pooped right after she threw up. I rushed her to the vet and they tried to say it could be Provo. I allowed them to run some tests and she came up negative. I spent so much money on medicine and diet food for her and right after we got home she was perfectly fine. And than exactly a week after my mother slammed the door on Iris's left hing leg. (Iris weigh only 2 pounds). Iris wouldn't put her leg down and she cried for such a long time. Her leg felt like it was broken. I had to rush her to the vet but when I got there the vet said they could not take her and that I had to go to the emergency clinic. The doctor at the clinic said she was fine that the door slamming on her just scared her. The clinic ran some tests and did some x-ray and said she was perfectly fine. (The visit cost me $180) About a week later Iris went to the vet to get her shots and de-wormer and after she got her de-wormer she started gagging like she was going to vomit but nothing came out. I called the vet back and told them about it and they told me to bring her back. The vet told me that they didn't know what was going on and if I wanted to know they would have to run some tests because it could be a lot of things. I told the vet I did not know because last time I let them tell me it was something serious and spent so much money Iris was perfectly fine. So the vet lady was like why is it a finical issue. It seems like the vet is always trying to get me for money. Since all of these situation, Iris's training slowed down because I wanted to train her when she is in good shape and in a good mind set. But it seems like Iris don't want to learn! She does not come when I call her! She does what she wants when she wants! What should I do!!!???!!! Or should I mention it seems like the top of her head is balding and her coat seems to be getting thinner too!! |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Wow, you have had an eventful few months with your Iris!. If you go to the training forum there are lots of information about training your dog. You also should consider going to take obedience lessons with your gal. Yorkies for sure can be stubborn, and if this is your first dog, it might be best to take lessons with an experienced trainer.

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Welcome to YT! Definitely start puppy class! You can take basic obedience classes at Petsmart, Petco, or local dog training centers. We chose a local place and it is fabulous. Katie Scarlett is so well behaved and I know the class helped her. She still needs to work on her 'come' when called. We mastered stay, but she just is having a harder time with coming to me when I call. We are working on it though.

| Puppy hood is hard and training is hard and take lots of work and time. Have you thought of doing a puppy class at petsmart? When you can not watch her it would be best for her safety to be put in a play pen so she cannot get into anything she shouldn't and so she wont get hurt. Its very important everyone in the house start to slow down and know there is a puppy around and that they need to watch there feet and if they slam doors or anything because she could have been very hurt. Puppies do not come knowing how to come, sit, stay, where to go potty and stuff you have to teach them and it doesn't happen in a day.

| Wow, it sounds like your first month has been eventful. I agree with the others... Get her in a puppy training class. Be patient. Remember, she is just a baby and is learning what is expected of her. She needs your guidance. Also, please keep her crated or confined when you can't watch her so she doesn't get into anything more dangerous... Puppies are known to chew electrical cords, and that is not something you want to mess with.
