Senior Yorkie Talker | Very proud of my boys... but am I doing the right thing... Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am VERY over protective of my boys... Some will say I need to chill out because they are only dogs, To that I say kiss my you know what... That just bugs me to no end, yea maybe I do value my dogs more then the next person because I can't have children so I put that value onto my dogs then.. Well last night my brother in-law suggested that I just let my dogs go outside to do their business without a lead, I ALWAYS had them on their leads because I am paranoid of them running off or something bad happening to them. Well I did that and so far the couple times they actually go out and do their business I think they are liking that better they seem to do it faster then being on the lead. I feel bad, like I should keep to what I am doing but so far they are doing great with the no lead, I am out there with them watching their every move to call them back to me if they wander too far and they are being good boys... Am I being to paranoid? UGH I wonder about myself!!! lol

| Hmmm...if they arent in a fenced in area, I would definately keep doing what you have been doing!! I, for one, would be scared to death of one of them suddenly getting the urge to run or another dog suddenly appearing and they aren't in your immediate reach...just my opinion!!!

| I would NEVER let mine out without a lead. All it would take is one squirrel, and off across the road he would go. I would be devastated if he ran off or was hit because I wasn't as protective as I should have been knowing he's a runner.

| My yard is fenced and it still makes me nervous. My boy is an escape artist...even when they are fenced in, I need to keep an eye on them. Tucker can scale tall buildings in a single bound....well umm he really can jump a gate that is thigh high. He has the "I think I am a cat Syndrome..." Yesterday I came down stairs and he was on top of the dining room table??? |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I'd agree -- if you're not in a fenced yard, keep them on the lead. It's more work, but I can't count the number of times I've read stories of Yorkies being hit by a car. My dogs are real good off-lead, and I let them off at the park on a daily basis. But in front of the house, where they can reach the street, I keep them on lead 99 percent of the time. I'll occasionally break the rule and let them walk to the car off-lead, but it's dumb and I know better.

| All it takes is a rabbit, squirrel, another big dog, or something that makes them want to take chase. They will all do it at the time you are least expecting it. Just be careful. It's better than being regretful.

| , mine are never outside without a lead and even if we had a fenced in yard, there are large birds of prey that will pick them up right out of your yard. It has happened many times in this area. I say better safe than sorry.

YT 2000 Club Member | Our back yard is totally privacy fenced in, and I STILL won't let our lil ones out to run and play without being on a lead. I've seen the hawks, eagles and owls carry squirrels and kittens off around here, and my lil ones aren't much bigger at all. And even with them on the lead, the hawks hover around my back yard like they STILL wanna come and scoop them up. No way, couldn't pay me enough to let my little ones off lead, even if I was standing right next to them. It only takes a split second and they could be gone.

| I don't let ours run without a lead but we live in the country. I wouldn't even let her run in a city without a lead. I guard my baby like a hawk watching her baby chicks. I know some people think I am weird but I don't care they can raise their yorkie kids and I'll raise mine. My husband and I love her so much and get all that love back everyday from our little girl. Some strangers I do not even want them petting her. Just an over protective Mom. Susan |
