| Can this be hereditary ? PLEASE HELP I'm looking to buy another yorkie & there is this one in particular that I am looking to get , but the father of the pup has leather ears, I've both heard & read about this controversial subject on the internet, but nobody seems to have a real & actual answer as to what it is. & I'm just wondering if leather ears can be something hereditary ? any information on the subject would really be greatly appreciated

| I have heard that exposure to cold can cause leather ear. I wonder if you posted in Breeder Talk if one of the longtime breeders can answer the genetic issue. I'm interested too.

| I've heard about the cold and humidity being a cause but, also...they can happen from being in fly infested areas...their ears are leather worn from being bit by flys

| Just thought I'd give everyone a little update : so far haven't heard of it being hereditary , mostly known to be a fungus, more suseptable to silky coated yorkies apose to cotten coated yorkies. Also more prone to yorkies in the winter or just cold tempetures. Advised to keep ears warm & to blow dry hair instead of naturally dry , after giving your furbaby a bath, hope that helps someone out there

| One of my fosters had leather ear but it eventually went away with an anti-fungal and good nutrition. 107barney was referring to the breeder area of YT. Here's a link Breeder Talk - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community

It's usually the ears and the bridge of the nose too.
