Senior Yorkie Talker | Loss of Appetite after Vaccination (Please note that I have also posted this message on the Yorkie Health Board) Hi all, I am in desperate need of some urgent feedback! Lexi will not eat after her second shot. She used to eat three-four times a day along with NutriCal in between meals. I've tried everything (fruit, yogurt, cooked food, canned food, dry food...etc), every brand and every trick that I have read other people use. The only thing that she will eat is the NutriCal. I have to force feed her food and give lots of praise. This has been going on for a week now. She is peeing and pooping normally and is acting her usual playful self. But I am still extremely worried. I took her to the vet and they scanned her stomach and took a blood test, the results were normal. They then administered another dewormer and advised to continue to give her the NutriCal. I have read that vaccinations can cause appetite loss, but for how long. I have exhausted everything I can think of and the vet is telling me its normal behavior for the type of dog and size. Please advise whether you have had any experience with this, I would really appreciate it because I refuse to accept that she has suddenly become picky after having such a great appetite. Thanks so much!

| Hi. I'm not sure why your vet would say it's normal behavior, I can see a day maybe even 2 at the most of a loss of appetite after a vaccine, but not a week It's great that you went back and had some tests run and that she's otherwise acting normal (you can most likely rule out a vaccine reaction them). I'd say lay off the Nutrical - it's definatly great for warding of hypoglycemia (spell?) but it can also make them not want to eat because the sugar content is so high, it can make them feel "full". I'd completely stop the Nutrical and keep trying to get her to eat food. If she still won't, I'd go see a different vet. Good luck

| I agree if it goes on for more than a day or two its definitely not normal. Does Lexi have a favorite food? Have you tried giving her that? If she says no to it i would definitely recommend taking her to another vet. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Thanks to you both for your replies and suggestions I will try to stop giving her the NutriCal but I am so afraid because she is not eating. I definitely have in mind that I am not going back to that Vet and will be seeking a second opinion. First big no no for me was when she was giving Lexi her second shot she was literally chocking her in order to keep her still. I had to ask her to be careful. I then told the head vet that I wanted another vet thereafter, so when I went back in to get the tests the head Vet tended to me and her attitude was a little laid back, which bothered me. How in the world can anyone say its normal for a puppy to just stop eating? I think she got offended because I told her its the shot that caused it. She kinda put her hands up like "how dare you!" Lexi hasnt really established a favorite food. I basically cooked for her after many attempts to get her to eat dog food with no success. She ate the cooked food with no problems. Other than recently I havent tried her on anything else.

| That def is a big red alarm to me. My vet handles presto very gently and always keeps in mind that he is smaller in size. His breeder recommended that vet and we have never had any issues. I would def switch. For the food, i would recommend mixing some white rice and yogurt and try to feed lexi that. You can also try boiled chicken. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Oh for sure! Definitely a big red flag! The only reason I used the vet is because its the same vet the breeder uses for all her dogs. But after speaking with her she also expressed that she doesnt like the vet that first tended to Lexi. Unfortunately I tried the boiled chicken, white rice and yogurt but she still wont eat it. She'll smell it, lick it with her tongue and walk away. The only thing I havent tried is cottage cheese and parmesan cheese. So I will be getting those from the supermarket today and hopefully she will respond. Thanks again!

Senior Yorkie Talker | I will. Lexi loved apples before she stopped eating, now she just smells it and shows no interest. When I first gave her an apple, i took off little pieces and fed her. I wish i had a video she kept coming back for more and more and she was so excited about eating this apple. She ate a half of apple! Ahhh thinking about how excited she was about food and how she is now makes me so sad Oh i just remembered... the vet said it could be liver problems. I am really hoping it is nothing serious and she is just going thru a phase.

| Oh no don't worry she will be ok. two shots in one day can be a lot for them also, lexi will be in my prayers. Try giving her boiled apple bits maybe she will like em more. Good luck to you and hugs to lexi! |

♪♥ Jazi & Izi's Mom ♥♫ Donating Member | When Jazi got her 12 wk shots (the vet wanted to space them out) her ears that had been standing, flopped. For a whole week. They're perfect now and she's done with all her shots till next year. That tells me the shots could affect them for a week, at least. No expert, but hoping to make you feel better.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I am at ease today. I bought some cottage cheese last night and mixed it with Lexi's dry food. She ate it! This morning and last night. Fingers crossed she continues to eat! Thanks for all the support.
