| Collar!!!!! I posted a few weeks ago about having a collar on my Poppy because i thought it was safer due to where i live.... how wrong could i be. About 5mins ago Poppy started screaching like i have never heard before i look down and see her coller had got caught in her mouth and she was choaking and panicing. I tried to get to get if off and couldnt and i started screaming i thought she was going to die. My OH jumped in and got it off her checked her mouth but she was fine. She is going to the vets tomorrow for her second shot so will have her checked over. I have never been so scared in my life. I am even crying still now. I think i am in shock because i cant stop shaking and crying even tho i know she is ok. I now have pains in my side. I feel horrible and sick. I am going to go because i cant stop shaking xxx

| I am very sorry that you had this terrible collar scare with Poppy. I am so very glad that you were nearby and that all is well. I bet Poppy is getting lots of extra hugs and kisses! |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I'm glad you were there to help her. I still swear by collars for id's, but I use the break away cat collars in case they get caught on something.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i'm sorry you were both scared. that can happen if the collar isn't fitted properly. it happened to my cat when she was 8 weeks old and i couldn't find a collar small enough for her. I always keep a collar on my yorkie for identification purposes. I make sure i can get easily fit one finger between the collar and her neck. I also check to see if the collar can in any way slip over her ears or chin. when you read about collar fitting rules its typical to see them say you should be able to fit 2 fingers under the collar, but that rule only applies to large, medium, and some small dogs. it doesn't apply to toy breeds.

| She is still so small and this is the smallest collar there is. I was so upset last night it had REALLY shook me up. Poppy was fine right after running about trying to climb on me and she seemed to have no pain in her mouth or throat. I sat there after sobbing and shaking it was horrible i have never felt like that before. I was shaking for a good hour later and in the end i had to go to bed and lye down. I never want to feel like that again. Yes poppy got ALOT pf hugs and kisses last night xxxx

| The same thing happened to Dustee when my daughter put her collar on her she didnt make it tight enough and she had it stuck in her mouth very tightly against her jaws my husband held her and i removed it but it is a horrible expericense and since then none of my furbutts wear them anymore. It was a toy collar but my daughter just made it too loose.

| The exact same thing happened when I first got Crickett. Scared the bejeezus out of me! (Crickett too I'm sure!) I understand exactly how you feel. Like you, at the time I didn't realize it being too big could be such an issue, and it was the smallest I could find.) Lesson Learned. I think you are getting great advise though. I now use a break-away for identification but it took me awhile to give it another try. I'm so glad Poppy is okay.

| I have only used a hardness on Pixie. I have put her ID tags on one of the metal circles that is on the hardness. The tags don't bother her at all. I would never have thought of putting a collar on her.

| Sounds like the collar is too big. Your original idea is still correct that you should keep collar/id on her. If she is too tiny to buy ready-made collar, maybe you can have one made especially for her? I think chattiesmom can help you with that. |
