| Someone please tell me what to do!!! Trixie is scheduled to be spayed (and have a baby tooth removed) on Monday and I am thinking about cancelling the appointment. I am so upset at the thought of her going in for surgery that is not necessary or life-saving. I have been crying for the past two nights just thinking about it. What if something happens to her during the surgery. How can I drop her off to be operated on when she trusts me and doesn't know what is going on....she will be in pain afterwards and has to stay overnight. How can I leave her in pain and all alone in a cage.....sigh. (She sleeps with me everynight in our bed) I understand the reasoning for spaying her and I don't want her to have a litter and I want to honor what I told the breeder about having her spayed, but I feel so guilty and heartbroken thinking about her trusting me and my just leaving her there and hurting afterwards. She won't be able to understand what is happening to her and I am worried she will be afraid. I just love her such a whole bunch...it's killing me thinking about it. I cannnot be the only one who suffered thinking about spaying their precious pup......please share your advice on how you coped and convince me not to cancel her appointment. I know this may sound silly to some, but please help.

| I felt the same way you do and actually cancelled my girl's surgery a couple of times because she wasn't even 3 lbs. and I was worried until my vet assured me that she spays kitten and rats that are only about 1 1/2 pounds!! My girls were definitely bigger than rats and that calmed me. She also only made an incision that was about 5/8" long that she could get her finger in, she doesn't use instruments so that she doesn't perforate a bowel or other organ. She also let me be there in the operating room for the surgeries and I was the one they woke up to in the recovery room. My vet hospital has an open door policy that you can be with your pet any where in the hospital, including the operating room!! I know, cool hospital, huh. Also, I never let them keep them overnight, they always come home with me and are fine!! Mine had to have 6 baby teeth pulled and it took over an hour to get the teeth out!!! Any way, make sure that your vet is comfortable doing the little ones and ask if you could stay with her and bring her home when you are done. Good Luck and relax.

| I'm sure she will do just fine. Probably better than you will. I had the same feelings when we recently had Gracie spayed. She's not a tiny yorkie, but I still worried about her. Usually our vet keeps them overnight but I asked them if there is anyone on staff overnight and there was not. I felt she would be better off at home with us, just in case. Our vet agreed to that and we picked her up just before they closed. She did just fine and you would not have known she even had surgery. On the other hand, I live in a large metropolitan area and knew that if we need it, we had a 24 hour emergency vet to fall back on if we needed medical help for her. I feel they recover better when they're with the ones they love...
