| No sweet potatoe chews!!!!! Today I gave the girls a sweet potato chew and all of a sudden Pixie swallowed the whole thing and started choking. I could feel it in her throat and I did not know what to do I started panicking. I tried to rub her throat to get it down and she was starting to have a hard time breathing. I was freaking out.............I put her on the floor and she barfed it up!! Thank God. That was horrible. I am NEVER giving her one of those again. Does anyone know what to do if they are choking, I never want to feel that helpless again.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | What a great question!!! I'm glad she's ok - you must have been terribly scared! Last week I thought Bridget swallowed her barrett and I thought OMG what am I going to do if she starts choking. I never leave her alone with them in her hair, but two things happend at once and she disappeared from my sight for just a second and "POOF" it was gone. Long story short I searched for days for it and she brought it to me 3 days later....still don't know where it was. But I was scared to death. Worried about her fragile throat too - didn't want to do any damage. They are like little vaccums...I should have named her "Hoover" or better yet...."Dirt Devil"! I can't wait to see the response!

| I know exactly how you felt. A similar thing happened with my Muffin when she was about 1 or 2.

| The sweet potato chews are from vitality, but she had eaten some and then when it got down to the size of a half a dollar she swallowed the whole thing.

| Here's my thread. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...kehouse-8.html Unfortunately nothing I did made a difference and they are still selling these without a warning that they can be dangerous for small dogs.

| That's not the sweet potato The issue is, like with everything, you have to watch before they get down to a throat-size you have to take them away. I am always cutting of the end of the chew sticks when they get "gummy" like I am sure Sophie likes. But I do not want to take the chance that she get's the piece off and chokes or swallows it and it becomes lodged further down. Ever vigilant folks!! |

| I'm so happy she is ok. That could have played out quite differently. Any of those hard treats are just a disaster waiting to happen. Just microwave or bake a sweet potato and mix with some "nummy" salmon and cheese. She will love you forever. To microwave potatoes, wash, stab with fork, and coat with either butter or olive oil and wrap in a soaking wet paper towel and bake for about 5 minutes for a small and 8 for a medium/large. For a nice snack, give her some fresh apples, berries or dried fruit.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Oh yes she does have the hiding places....there are treats everywhere and I can tell when I'm getting close because she dances the jig - I think she's trying to distract me. Lil' bottom feeding snail.....too cute!!!
