| Should i adopt unaltered male? Hi All! I may have the opportunity to adopt a 2 year old (soon to be 3)unaltered male. He weighs 4 lbs, and the breeder said he's house trained, but "may mark his new territory". I would be getting him on the condition that I neuter him. He was returned to the breeder because his owner got seriously ill. He's sooo cute. I just worry about the marking business. Once he's neutered will this behaviour stop? BTW...just discovered Yorkie talk and I love it here! Thanks in advance Neenagh |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Hi, welcome to Yorkietalk! I've adopted several male dogs from the pound, and never had any problem with marking, but several things factor into this. The dogs were probably never used as breeders and also we were a one-dog family, and this makes the need to mark less compelling. I think you should probably be prepared for some marking, especially before he's neutered, and many people use bellybands on their male dogs. A bellyband is just a piece of velcroed material that holds a pad to catch marking drips. You have to take it off when the dog needs to pee, or otherwise, it's a diaper. I also think taking a dog for walks, and praising the marking outside cuts down on any marking inside. Neutering cuts down on marking, but it doesn't always eliminate it.

| Hi, Thanks for the info, very reassuring. I have seen the bellybands for sale, but I think i could probably make some. Maybe put a panty liner in them for extra security? Oh and I absolutely love your yorkies costume! It's hilarious! Thanks again, Neenagh |

| I adopted a 4 year old male Yorkie from a shelter and he was neutered the day before I adopted him. He does occasionally urine mark in the house. My vet said that because he was neutered well into adult-hood, he will probably continue to urine mark because the habit was already formed. However, Boomer has brought so much joy to my life that dealing with his 'accidents' is totally worth it. Just make sure that you thoroughly clean up after your new baby to prevent him from constantly returning to the same spot. Good luck! |
