How fast does a Yorkie's hair grow?

I trim Wiggy's facial hair about every 4-6 weeks to keep it out of his eyes. I'm wondering if all his coat grows equally as fast?

Also, what is the best type of brush to use to avoid breakage?

I think Tias grows really fast. I trim her myself she is 10 mths old. Her top knot hair grows the fastest . On average she gets cut once a month ,top knot sooner. In fact I trimmed her all over yesterday and she has such pretty colours coming through., they look like highlights lol.I use a comb or brush on her daily.

Rule of thumb is hair grows the fastest when we want it to grow the slowest. I started letting Joey's hair, on the bridge of his nose, grow out to reach his topknot last May, it will go in a band if I put the band really really low; it's taking forever to grow, but when I was trimming it, once a month was needed. Pin brushes are best for dogs with long hair, and one of our members sells a very nice Madan Pin brush. You want something that doesn't scratch the dogs skin, yet has no balls at the tips that break hair.

.....Last May!!!??? A year??? Is it "there yet??" I've started to do the same with Willow....She finally has enough hair and will actually let me pull it up into a little pony tail but that hair on the bridge of her nose and "moustache hair" is driving me nuts!!! A year!!!???? She's starting to look like Groucho Marx!! Do you have a recent photo of Joey (for encouragement? )

Yeah, I know, I think his hair just grows really slow, I don't know if others have a problem with this. His actual topknot grows pretty fast, it's that nose hair, but I had kept it cut pretty short. Thanks for the pics.....Joey is just so absolutely adorable!! I have to get some of the gel because it's more the hair just on the very top of Willow's nose that is driving me crazy...I don't think it will fit into the top knot, rather I think it will have to be groomed to either side of her face, near her mouth...just needs to grow out?

Oh thank you. When I first started growing the hair, the topknot gel was a lifesaver. Before I started using the gel, those short prickly hairs would get in his eyes. The gel really made it look like the hair had grown out from the beginning, and it's the only thing that kept me from cutting it again.

Petsilk topknot grooming gel, I didn't have any luck with the grooming shops I called, I had to buy it over the internet. You can sometimes find it on ebay, petsilk topknot gel - Google Product Search. Prices vary, I paid around 15, including shipping.

That sounds pretty good, but I think it's more for building body and volume. With the petsilk topknot gel, you don't use on the whole topknot, just on the short hairs. It has the consistency of honey and sticks the hairs together, but when it dries it doesn't seem sticky. I put a dab on my finger and rub that on my palm before applying just a smidgen. Some people have recommended Vaseline, but I didn't like the way it looked. I tried other things, hair spays and gels, but nothing works like this, and more importantly it's safe, if some of the hair coated with the gel, gets on your dog's eye, it won't hurt it like human products will.
