| sleep? hi everyone! so i was just wondering, when you all brought home your new puppies how often did they sleep? Toby sleeps a lot, he will take a nap, get up and go outside, maybe play for a half hour, eat sometimes and then back to sleep!! thats normal right? i keep reminding myself that he is a baby, and baby humans sleep a ton when they are newborn. also, last night he slept a lot from about 5:30 on... then it seemed like he was up crying a lot last night. should i try to keep him awake in the evenings or just let him sleep? i'm sure he needs it... but i need sleep at night too haha anybody crate train? i put him in his crate during the day when he falls asleep and he usually whines a few minutes, then goes for his nap. but there were points last night that i thought he hadn't slept all night b/c he was crying so much. i want him to LIKE his crate lol. I did get up with him every two hours to go potty but i'm wondering how long before he is used to the crate at night? I know he misses his momma and is used to sleeping with his siblings, but i was just wondering how long it took other peoples babies to get used to the crate at night. I would just sleep with him in bed, but i'm scared of smushing him... thanks everyone, ya'll are lifesavers for people like me who have never had a puppy before!! |

| Yep, little pups sleep A LOT. I remember Jackson would get so tired after a half hour or so of playing and running around. I used to try to keep him up until 8 or 9pm. We would have a little playtime from 7-8pm ish and then I'd let him go potty outside and put him in his crate. He usually would sleep until 2:30amish and I'd let him out again and we'd go back to sleep. I'm already forgetting those tiny puppy days and Jackson is still only 6 months old. The first 3 weeks were the hardest, it was a lot of lack of sleep. I felt like a new mother to a real child, lol. Crate training didn't work out so hot for us. And I ended up letting him sleep on my bed with me after being so tired of sleepless nights .. and surprisingly, he ended up sleeping from 11pm-7am for me, LOL. So... there goes the crate. He hasn't had one accident in the middle of the night yet *knock on wood*

| They do sleep alot as long as they are active, eating, and drinking I would not worry to much. As for the crate I did crate train Milo, here are a few ideas to help you as I am not sure what you are doing The crate should only be large enough for them to stand up and turn around. Try to make it a cozy place , this may sound odd but I put a dirty baby blanket in the crate as a liner (I put it in the laundry basket for 24 hours) while this sounds gross it will smell like you soothing the puppy. Lastley naked baby in the crate no collar no harness nothing that could get caught on anything. I hope this helps |

| Yup they sleep a lot. I remember being concerned about it when I first brought Bailey home, but I quickly realized she just needed lots of sleep. I crate Bailey at night since the first night. Her crate is bigger. It's a medium size petmate crate. It's lined with a cozy blanket (it was sent from the breeder so it has her mom's scent). It's also got plush toys, a small pillow, and a food & water dish to take up all the room. There shouldn't be enough room of empty floor for them to make a potty, which is why I put so much stuff in hers to take up the room. (It has a metal partition, but I couldn't bring myself to use it.) The first night was the hardest. She whined for a while when I put her in. The important thing is to ignore the whining. If she's in there and quiet I might say "good girl". But talking to her when she's whining will only make it worse. The worst thing you can do it let them out when they whine. However sometimes whining might mean potty time, so it can be confusing! Bailey's been here almost 3 weeks and is now great with the crate. She rarely ever whines to get out anymore. Usually when she does wake me with whining I know she has to go. What I do when she whines in the night is take her straight to her potty pad. If she goes, great, I praise her and put her back. Sometimes she just wanders away and I can pretty much tell she just wanted out, so I take her straight back and don't talk to her. Bailey is 12 1/2 weeks and can stay in the crate with no potty break for about 8 hours. I don't even set my alarm for the middle of the night anymore because she wakes me when she has to go (whining). Oh, also one thing that really helped me was getting a night light to put next to her crate. That way if she whines at night I can look at her and tell if she's showing signs of having to go, or just wanting out. Oh and it's good to use a signal word like "bedtime" every time you put them in the crate. Bailey caught on quick (I think it also helped that her night time crate is different than her day one) that when I put her in there it's time to curl up and sleep.

| Puppies need sleep more than they need food or water. Fiona slept a lot too, and now she is just perfect!

| I just brought my Rudy home last week and noticed that he does sleep a lot. He is either going full fury or he is passed out asleep. I like to go to bed around 9:00 so what I have been doing is making sure to keep him awake from around 7:45 on. He starts fighting really hard around 8:30-8:45. I just keep playing with him and entertaining him to keep him up. By the time he goes outside to potty and then I put him in his crate he might wimper for a minute but he is so tired he just lays down. He has only been getting me up once a night to go out and I take him out, he goes rather quickly, lots a praise, and then right back in the crate. He will cry and whine a bit more when I put him back in but he does then lay back down and goes back to sleep. Believe me, I am no expert, I haven't even had him a week, but this seems to be working for us. Good luck, it sounds like we're in the same boat. |
