How often do you Brush Out?

Hi everyone,

Fagan is 14 weeks old. He's been to the groomer once already and did well. I have been trying to brush him at night but don't get to it every night. How pften so you bathe and brush them at this age? He tries to bite the brush while I brush him. He's so cute!

My breeder told me not to bathe the dogs before they are 6 months. On YT I have met tons of people who bathe their dogs MUCH earlier and therefore I tried to bathe my youngest at 12 weeks - and she lived through it
Now I give my dogs a bath once a month and brush them while their hair is still wet.
And they get an extra bath if there's a special occasion, like christmas, visitors from far away or going to the vets

Mollie did this when we first got her. I personally would try to brush him out if not daily every couple of days whether he needs it or not to get him use to it. My vet told me I should put Mollie on top of the washer or dryer to get her to stop biting at the brush. I never did it because she got use to it and stopped it.

I bathe Mollie about once every 1 - 2 weeks unless, she just gets an odor to her.

I have been brushing Millie Sage every day since she was 12 wks old (that's when I got her and she is now 17 wks old) She still is not "used" to it, but everyday does get better. I brush her on a counter top.

I do it everyday, because she gets so many tangles in between brushings, and it's a constant effort not to rile her up or hurt her from tugging the tangles loose. I can only imagine what it would be like if I waited 2 or 3 days.

I brush Olivia every day or every other day. I put her on the counter or on the toilet when I brush her and she sits perfectly still. When I try to brush her on the floor, she still tries to bite the brush. She gets a bath every week to week and a half. When her hair begins to look more disheveled more easily, I know it's bath time. Towards the end of the week, no matter how much I brush her, her hair won't stay smooth looking until she gets a bath.

eyedoc, try brushing your new bundle after he has played and a little tired out, he will proably submit more to the grooming. Also let him smell the brush before you start and during the grooming process. This has helped me in the past with grooming. I groom mine on a rotation basis due to the fact I have seven. But the more you do it the less time it takes to brush them out and less likely to find mats. Everyone gets their eyes and rears checked daily. Stay at it, it will get easier as time goes by.....

I wash Shelby's face and bottom and brush her every day. She gets a bath once a week.

If she had a playdate or romped in the grass too much it's hard to even wait a week!

Sometimes I wipe her down with doggie wipes.

She sleeps right next to my face at night, in the nook of my arm. Waiting longer than a week would be just toooo much.

she is 20 weeks and I have been doing this since I got her at 12 wks.

We comb Joey every day - otherwise he would get messy looking pretty quickly. We comb him out whenever he is chewing on his bone - he will let us do anything while he is chewing that thing...it is so great! We bathe him once a week, and he is only 5 months - no problems.

I started bathing Desi at 12 weeks old and do so once a week( she is 9 months old ). Now that its summer and especially that the weather in NY has been soooo hot. I've give a bath twice a week. Everyday, I comb her hair so she doesn't get matted.

toby is one year, i bath him at least once a week (always after i go to my moms flea infested house)....... i am really bad, i have brushed toby maybe about 5 times since i have gotten him (i got him at 12 weeks and he doesnt need it, i just do it because he likes it).. he has a puppycut and dosent mat or tangle i have no idea why, most people on here have a big problem with mats and stuff,lol..... miracle dog, the miracle that you dont ahve to brush everyday

I agree with everyone. Important to get him used to brushing by trying to do it everyday! When he's an adult, it will be much harder to keep his coat looking good because it gets so long-unless you will keep him clipped. I brush Scout (14 weeks) and Pippa (13 months) everyday. Scout has never had a problem with it, but Pippa did when she was younger. I bribe her with a few licks of Nutri-Cal every few minutes till I'm done with her.

We were already bathing at this age. We just made sure to keep them extra warm. We used a warmed up towel and blow dried them right after. If they still seem cold I would use a warm rice sock. They used to love to snuggle close to it. I brushed every day so that they would get use to it. Now they look forward to it. They love the attention.

I give my pups a bath every week and do a daily grooming. Each day I wash their faces and give them a brushing and put Daisy's hair in a little top knot.

I used to have to brush Chachi out all the time. Now I brush him when I have his conditioner on during his bath. His hair stays silky smooth and I dont have to brush him as often.

I brush my girls almost everyday, esp their faces and we do bathes at least once if not twice a week....they play outside alot and will often have leaves and junk in the hair, so we don't want them getting matted up!!

I would say start brushing him now so he learns what is expected of him...if you start at a young age, it will be much easier when his hair grows out!!
