| Is the dog the boss? How do you tell if your puppy thinks she is leader of the pack, and how to prevent/rectify it?

| well if you are asking... she probably is Usually you can tell because she won't listen... or will hear you and not obey.... will "demand" things... will bark or snap at you.... to fix the problem takes some work but it is do-able... we've been there! Layla sleeps in her crate... but if they sleep in your bed.. thats a major issue. because they are sharing where they sleep with you which makes them your equal. Walking is a great way to gain control back.. you lead the walk, and your dog should be right next to you... feeding is also important... you shouldn't free feed if you can help it... you are in control of the food and You decide when she gets it.. you should expect her to sit and wait nicely until you put the food down and dont' put it down until she is sitting calmly... same with treats.... She should be invited on the couch and other places you sit- it's not something she should be able to do when she wants. Hope that helps! |

| Millie sleeps on the floor beside the bed but usually gets up on the bed in the middle of the night. She will sleep until we are ready to get up. We did have her in the kitchen for the first few months, but she would waken about 6am and want out. So it makes it slightly easier for us this way. She will usually when she is told to sit etc, and I am trying to teach her to stay. We are going to obedience classes at the minute and she is sooo easily distracted. She will sort of listen, but just wont pay attention very long. The lady taking the class says a lot of it is do to with her age and short attention span. The sofa issue is something I need to get sorted, and in fact the lady taking the class said exactly the same thing last week. She currently even has her own chair! With regard food, she doesnt rush over for her food, but she will try to jump up for her treats though she doesnt get them until she sits. She really does pester us when we are the dinner table having our dinner. We have high back leather chairs, and she scratches at them and at my leg in the same way she does on the door when she wants out. She has gotten much better in the lead and there is rarely tension on the lead any more. She will NOT come back when she is called if she gets out the front door. She is also not very good at coming back at any other times. She is a bit of a manic barker, and wont be quiet when told. Barks at noises from next door, when the door bell goes on the television etc. What do you think. She is almost 7 months. I am hoping some of it is puppy stuff, though I know it will get worse if I dont do something about it.

Also when you are eating- she needs to be in another room- we crate Layla in the kitchen when we eat and then when we are done- she gets to get out and have HER supper- so she gets that WE eat first- she eats second. Come is a TOUGH one and it takes A LOT of work. What I did was spend a few days with my mom holding Layla at one end of the room and i would say LAYLA COME she would come barreling towards me and she gets LOTS of treats (Come should be the only command where she ALWAYS gets treats- lots of them and her favorite so when you MEAN come- she knows that what you are going to give her is so much better than what she sees) so you need to always have treats with you and when you walk practice- ask her to sit- stay and then say... COME and give her lots of treats.... do it in your backyard when she is sniffing something- and always lots of treats so she will always know that come means some great things! Have you tried pennies in a can when she barks? Barking will only get worse if you dont' stop it. You can do a few things.. I clap my hands loudly and it gets her attention... if she is getting carried away I put her on her back and hold her down and say NO. or you can try the cans. It also helps to teach her what BARK means.. so she can do it on command and then will understand what NO bark means. It's great you are doing obedience- it will really help- the short attention is because she is a puppy | |
