| Puppies And Kibble...too Soon?? Our little puppies are now 4 weeks old, and all healthy little guys. We keep them in a play pen with a bed and blankets, pee pads, a bowl of water and a small bowl with Royal Canin Baby Dog Food in it. Mom, Coco, asks to be put in when she wants to check on them and feed them (and then asks to be taken out). They are gaining weight every day, so I know she has enough milk and she feeds then often. The food and water is for her because I put her in the playpen whenever we leave the house. From about 2 weeks old, all the puppies started crawling out of the bed area and peeing on the pee pads, then crawling back into bed. At this time they are investigating every part of the play pen, including the water and food bowls. I've seen them put their noses in the water and food. Today our most precocious little guy (Webster) started eating kibble. They don't really have teeth yet! He got a piece down and hasn't seemed to have any ill effects... What do you think? Should I take the food out of the play pen??

| Is it straight kibble or is it softened w/ water? At 5 wks or so they should be old enough to start eating kibbled that has been softened a bit w/ water.

| No, this is straight, dry kibble because it was intended for mom -- not puppies. I don't want to wean them too early, so am concerned about them starting to eat kibble so soon.

| I wouldn't leave dry food down so the puppies could get at it. I never start my pups on dry at that age and when I do start them on dry (at about 6 weeks) I monitor them so there are no choking incidents. I usually start them on dry by hand feeding them some a few times to see how they handle it. There always seems to be one that doesn't get the hang of it at first. For me, I always just watch them eat until they're done and never leave the house with food down. At 4 weeks, leaving dry food available to puppies is a recipe for tragedy. |

| ok, no I wouldn't advise straight dry kibble at their age.
