| Ok, I need serious help! So it's day 4 of attempted potty training. Every time Kya has had an accident I've caught her, said bad potty, and taken her outside. The only place outside that I've gotten her to potty is on the back porch and in the parking lot! lol (I live in an apartment, my back porch backs up to a small field). I'm afraid that she's learned that pottying in general is bad, bc she'll wait until I'm in the bathroom and sneak where I can't see and pee. She holds it until she can't hold it anymore. She will not potty in front of me, including outside, and I don't know what to do! I've been reading up on crate training, and although I hate putting her in the crate bc she whines, I think that's the only way to go. Except, I've left her in the crate while I have class for up to 3 hours, and when I let her out we go outside and still no potty! She's never gone in the crate either! How can I convince her that going potty outside is fun? I'd love to praise her but she won't go at all! Thanks! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | you need to put a leash on her, right when you get home from class and carry her outside. put her in the area you want her to go potty. give her the command and then prepare yourself to stay out there until she goes. I did this with morgan when i first got her home. we stayed outside in the heat, in the sun, in the rain, and in the dark for however long it took her to go. in a few days she realized that if she goes potty right when we get outside then she either gets play time outside or play time inside. i say to put the leash on her because you don't want her to be able to walk around the whole yard or large area outside. you want to stand in one spot and only give her the 6 foot range around you to go. don't move until she goes. yes she will try all sorts of things to get you to cave and go back inside but you need to stick it out. I think morgan got the picture when i made her stand out there in the rain for 20 minutes until she went. LOL If your pup has accidents whenever you leave the room because you think she's holding it until your not there then either take her with you in the bathroom or put her in her crate. whenever you cannot watch her, even for a minute, put her in the crate. then when you come back, if you think she needs to go, immediately bring her outside. Oh also, if you've been standing outside with her for a long time and she still hasn't gone, then take her back inside and put her in teh crate for 5 minutes. then take her back outside and start over. the process is long but you'll be happy when she finally gets it and it sticks.

| Thanks for the advice! It's so easy to cave in when it's freezing outside, but I guess it's time to just suck it up. |

| Another question, can I talk to her and praise her while she's in the crate? Or should it be in another room? |

| When she potties in the right place be sure to praise her to death and give a treat. That should quickly get her over not wanting to go in front of you!

this is what i did: when i came home from work or where ever, i would not say anything to morgan in her crate because i didn't want her to get excited and pee in the crate. i would calmly walk over and take her out. put the harness and leash on and take her outside to potty. Then after she was finished i would praise and play with her and go crazy. if she's in the crate and throwing a fit then you need to ignore her. example: you need to answer teh phone or go to the bathroom and you put her in the crate so she won't potty on the floor. if she's crying and barking, ignore her. even after you finish what you are doing and she is still crying, ignore her. Only let her out when she is quiet so she knows being a good girl in teh crate means she comes out. throwing a fit in the crate means staying in there until she calms down. i guess it all depends on how you are training her. I fully crate trained my yorkie when she was a puppy. some here don't believe in that, others aren't as strict. but all i can say is that i have a quiet, calm, crate trained, housebroken, 4.5lb yorkie that can hold her pee for a very very long time (...mommy is lazy on weekends....LOL)

also remember that as soon as she starts to potty tell her good girl calmly, then when she is finished get all excited with the good girls, and give her a treat immediately when she is finished. i say to tell her good girl calmly when she starts because with some dogs if you say it more vigorously when they start, they will stop and get excited and not finish. lol
