| Help with paper training, please Hi, I just got my puppy; she is 10 weeks old. I've only had her 3 days, but can already see training her is going to be hard. Her breeder had the 4 puppies in a pack n play where she had newspapers on one end. This seemed to work while they were in the pen. She also had newspaper by a door when the puppies were out. It's my understanding they had pretty free run of the house. I tried to emulate the situation and got a pack n play rather than a crate. I put a little tray with newspaper on it at the other end of the play. Emma will use that paper when she's in her pen and wakes up from a nap. She will NOT use the paper I have out for her when she is up and running around the house. She knows where her food and water is (kind of a large house) but seems oblivious to the papers. The breeder said she was doing really well on the papers at her house. Perhaps it's just that she's new here, but she is going wherever she wants. I even put pee from her paper in the pen on her other paper, but it doesn't seem to entice her. I tried pee pads but she just seemed confused and chewed on them, so I figured I'd use paper because she was used to it. I am wanting to use the little tray with papers, somewhat like a litter box and keep that situation for her due to where I live, etc. Any suggestions??? I'm not crazy yet, but my partner might be soon. PS this is my first time here, so thank you for any help you can offer. Thanks! sammer |

| Nancy1999 posted this link the other day: Free House Training for Puppies and Adult Dogs - No More Accidents Starting Today! It is a step by step guide that walks you through the process of house breaking from beginning to end ... one of the best resources I've seen yet! For the time being I think it will help to keep your pup in a contained area ... giving them free rein of the house can be disastrous ... they really need to cement in their minds where it's ok to go before they're allowed more space. When I was training Oscar I'd let him run free for about 30 minutes immediately after he went, then I'd put him back in his crate or the gated off kitchen until it was time for him to do his business again. It didn't take long for him to catch on. Hang in there! I know it can be maddening, but your little girl will eventually get it.

| Cinnamon uses a wizdog (INDOOR DOG POTTY for: dog house training, housebreaking puppies, dog and puppy training), and I line it with puppy pads. It's great because the pee goes to the bottom so they do not have to walk on it. It's lightweight and easy to travel with. When I first got it when she was a puppy, I would put her on it every 20-30 mins, and tell her to go potty. I would bend her hind legs gently to get her to sit. Also, if I saw her sniffing around or about to squat, I would pick her up and run her to the wizdog and tell her to go potty. After she would pee or poo, I would jump up and down and say, "Good Girl! Good potty!!" She got the hang of it pretty quickly, but she had plenty of misses right in front of it every once and a while. I never got mad at her for accidents; I would only point to her wizdog and tell her, "Potty here. This is good potty." I also trained her to get wiped after she pees so she doesn't get the little dribbles on sheets, clothing, skin, etc. After she pees, she scratches and scratches (like kicking dirt if outside) the floor until someone wipes her. We keep the wizdog upstairs in our bathroom, and if we're all downstairs, she'll run upstairs to potty/poo, then scratch at the top of the stairs until we come up to wipe her or pick up her poo to flush. |

| thanks for replies, one more ? Hi, thank you both for your replies. I think the first mistake I'm making is not confining her to a space--the house is large and her food is in the kitchen and her pack n play (and where I play with her) is about 4 rooms away. I found the"Housebreaking Bible Forum very informative. In reading the articles, it seems I was going to go from this error to another. It says not to have a crate large enough where their bed is on one end and the papers on the other. Because this is how she learned in the pack n play at the breeders, I was going to do just that. She will use the tray with the paper if she's in her pack n play napping and wakes from a nap. Because she does that, I thought if I got a larger crate and had the "bedroom/bathroom" situation, she would not only use it when she was shut in the crate, but perhaps would use it if the crate door is open. I've seen her circle while she's out and put her on the papers outside of her pen, but she totally ignores them---I've put her in the pack and play and she immediately used the papers in there. SO, with all this said, I am thinking if she had access (when she was out of the crate) to the one she is using, she'd use it. She is only 10 weeks and about 1.5 lbs. so she can't hold it for very long. I know I have to limit her access to the whole house. What do you think of my idea? Am I just creating another problem or by allowing her access to the papers both when she's in the crate and out, will this work? My partner is losing patience (he's not a patient man to begin with) and said today "she's going to ruin the hardwood floors." I'm at a loss. I think because of the way she was trained at the breeders, I'm having a hard time now. Any thoughts are welcome. sammer PS I also checked out the WizDog and am kind of doing the same thing, buy without the screen thing--I have a shallow tray under the papers. |
