Food problems with pup I would be interested to know what the UK members feed their Yorkies on. The reason I ask is that Im having trouble finding a dry food that doesnt give Hedley diarrhoea and the only thing we have found at the moment is Chappie original. I would just be interested to know what others use, particularly those with pups, as Hedley is 14 weeks.

Hiya, I'm using Orijen puppy and James wellbeloved puppy food. As a treat I give some wet food like the Nature's diet pouch or the James Wellbeloved pouches. Occasionally I give Burns dry food, which you may find is easy on the stomach as it's not as meaty as the Orijen...all of these have samples that you can ask for to try. I'm sure you are, but I thought I'd ask, are you introducing a small amount at a time? A big change will sometimes give Belle "zee runnies". Good luck

Even small amounts introduced with current food or used as training treats cause the runs. We have tried James Wellbeloved puppy duck and rice, arden grange, burns mini bites, wafcol salmon & potato, pero puppy. I would consider the raw diet, but the chicken bones and raw chicken make me nervous, I have always been told not to give chicken bones to a dog and cant get away from that.

Hmmm...the breeder that I got Belle from insisted that I fed her minced beef and chicken livers, which I did for a while until I weened her off. However, she feeds adult dogs tripe (which you can get from the freezer section of pet stores - they also do raw with no bones)...maybe?!

Today and for the next week he is on small portions of mashed potato and whiting fillet (like cod), with added SF50, as due to his recent medication the mucous and blood are back in his poos. Yesterday he was refusing the Chappie altogether and jumping up at the cupboard where I have stored the dried food and treats. Its so hard not to feed him.

When my two younger ones were puppies I had them on Royal Canin, the puppy version think it's called Junior. Now they're on different things. Ellie is on Royal Canin Yorkshire, as is my old one, as they both are very inclined to getting the runs at the least little upset. This & W/H high fiber, which the vet swears by, are the only manufactured food that don't give them the trots. My old one went through five courses of anti-biotics at a different vet trying to sort it out! Then Royal Canin introduced Yorkshire specifically for the breed, I put her on it ( after finding it was advised for tummy problems) & she turned the corner....was diet related all along! My other youngster is on James Wellbeloved though as he has allergies & can't tolerate anything else, they make him wheeze & itch. But get some Promax. It's brilliant stuff to have on standby in the first aid box. You can get it from the vet or online. It isn't a drug, it's a pro-biotic paste. You give a tiny bit twice a day, the dose is on the syringe, & it clears up the runs like magic. My vet recommended it, he swears by it for his cats too, & I wouldn't be without it, saved lots of problems & vet bills. xx Meggie

YT 500 Club Member | Alfies breeder introduces his pups to all kinds to avoid transition problems but like most old time breeders prferes the freash meat and buisciy meal. After trying him on other foods I found it was best to stick to the same. When we got Rosie her skin was really itchy from being on dry foods, she also does better on the freash cooked, I put a pinch of SA37 on their food once a day. I also have a large tub of a powdered pro-biotic which is sprinked into their water if they have a tummy upset. |

It's Hill's Science W/H. I don't know anything about prokolin. Has it got kaolin in, sounds like it might have? Promax has no kaolin. It smells a bit meaty, no meat in it though. xx Emmy

Righto, today he is sick of the white fish! I got some of those frozen blocks of pure meat from pets at home in different flavours, like rabbit, tripe, turkey, fish to see if I can ring the changes. They are called Prize Choice Anyone else use these? I cant find the promax on the net, just prokolin. Last edited by Hedley; 12-07-2009 at 01:47 PM.

If you put Promax Paste in Google it comes up with several online suppliers. I haven't used them all. I've bought that meat from Pets at Home sometimes for my Skyes but the Yorkies can't get on with it. I usually buy them turkey mince or turkey pieces from the supermarket & either mix it with rice or boiled potato, or put it with their kibble to encourage them to eat it. If we're having chicken they have some of that. xx Meggie

Meggie, how many Skyes do you have? I had a lovely Skye bitch, my first dog, from 1978, cream with black points, from a Breeder in Barnsley who used to show them. Do you have any photos online? My mum and me adore Skyes, but you dont see them much, not around here anyway. Hedley is back on the fish again today and his tummy is OK. Will look at promax again. The promax I saw was body building stuff.

Pet Medic have it in stock. I mostly use Viovet for things but they don't seem to have any Promax in at the moment, or I buy it from my vet without a consultation as they know her problem. I have three Skyes at the moment, though I've always had them. Two are the cream with black points but my old one is black. xx Emmy Last edited by Meggie; 12-08-2009 at 10:40 PM.

Just to update this, I have managed to get Hedley established on orijen and its been a really good thing for him, he has been on it a few weeks and he is nice and solid. He doesnt enthusiastically gobble it down when its in the bowl though. If I put anything else in the bowl to make it more interesting eg Fish4Dogs salmon mousse, or Prize choice, he licks very carefully around the dried food and picks all the wet out. The best response I get from the orijen is when Im training him of an evening. He seems to like it as training treats, so he has the majority of it then. I have had a few samples of other foods such as JWB turkey and vegetable (cos its gluten free) and that suits him, he has had it as training treats. I also gave him some Fish4Dogs dry and he loves that, in fact he loves anything from Fish4Dogs and all sorts of fish, and they all suit him. Im so pleased to get over his early tummy troubles, its a relief. Im still avoiding anything with cereal in though. The big advantage is Orijen is there is less to pick up, and it picks up easily!!!
