Donating YT 11K Club Member | Interested in Breeding.. I am interested in breeding Yorkies but only after i am ready, have done tons of research(im still doing research), speak to breeders, i also want to attend a couple dog shows. I won't be breeding any of my midgets of course and when i am ready and do decide to get my first male and female to breed i will tell the breeder i am getting them from my plans. But i have a couple of ques. I know that the male and female to breed need to be tested, what do they need to get tested for before being bred? I know Liver shunt is one, are there any more? What other things should i know, if anyone can give me any info...thanks!

| Some of the normal testing before breeding would be x-ray of hips and legs, Full blood panel & bile acids test. teeth, ears and eyes checked and if you get dogs that have been breed before you would want them tested for STDs or bacteria prior to breeding. |

| I just want to mention one quick thing about liver shunt. It is possible for your dogs to have normal bile acid tests but throw a puppy who does have a liver shunt...So, you would have to be prepared for something like this. Researchers have not found the genetic marker yet, so there is no genetic test to determine whether a dog carries the gene for producing a pup with liver shunt. That's what makes a difference in breeders...A breeder who is prepared to deal with these situations and a breeder who is not. Hopefully, you would be buying from a breeder who knows their lines really well, but it's always a possibility...

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | There are some really good books out there on breeding. Myra Savant-Harris has written a few good books. Start with one and keep reading. I read all the time; maybe a book exchange would work. |

Donating YT 11K Club Member | Thank you guys so much for supporting me! I really hope to breed one day and want to do it the right way. I am going to read books about it, look online and find out all the info i can about pedigree, blood lines, etc. I just really love the Yorkie breed, more than i ever have for any other breed and the joy and excitement from seeing creatures grow is amazing and fulfilling. I bred and handfed Cockatiels before, got up every 2 hours to syringe feed them until they matured and the feeling was so good to see them grow and know that I helped with that. They are definetly not dogs but I know the dedication, care and love that it takes to breed. I am not going to do it to make money, and if anyone can help me and give me tips, info i would really appreciate that! Thanks everyone!
