Default Tomorrow is "D" Day for Twinkles

At the suggestion of some "seasoned" YT's, I am starting a new thread.
Background: Twinkles is my 2 year old (9/4) grand-Yorkie (granddaughter) who is expecting her first litter of five puppies due 8/16/07. The daddy is my one yr. old (9/27) Ollie, who did a sneak attack - in other words, this was totally unplanned! But they are coming and I love them all already.

After a false start last night, Twinkles spent the day resting, although she still is having diarrhea. She spent most of the day in her whelping box but this afternoon, she jumped OVER her x-pen (no kidding) free-style. Scared me to death because I was afraid she would hurt herself or one of the pups!

I called the vet to ask about what to feed her because her appetite is off and everything goes right through her. The vet put her on meat baby food and boiled chicken and I am giving her Nutracal to keep up her strength so she has energy when she goes into labor. Her nipples began leaking colostrum today. I keep thinking she will go into labor soon because she is very restless, panting and can't seem to stay in one place for very long.

Last night we ended up in the ER because we thought she was in trouble... thank goodness she was OK! It it weren't for the YT forum, I would have really panicked! This group is great! I will be going online the first sign of labor.... beware! I have read everything I can get my hands on and short of kidnapping someone from this group, I am as ready as I can be, I guess.

Thanks in advance for all the help, advice, encouragement and Yorkie love everyone has given so far. Off to try to get some sleep - just in case tonight really is the night!

When they whelp, it's a long night. Bless your heart, you had a pre-whelping long night. Better rest up.

I've got a maltese that was due on the 14th (first due date) and I'm probably going to have to cancel a weekend getaway to be here for the whelping. I'm just dying, and it seems she's determined for me to cancel. Her temp is not low enough so it wont be too awful soon.

We'll be checking back to see how you're doing.

I can identify with that one - had to cancel our weekend in Napa - we were supposed to leave today - her supposed due date (just found out she was preggers 2 weeks ago). It was my only "vacation" this summer. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Poor thing is lying on the couch next to me blown up like a balloon, tongue hanging out, panting away. She looks like a helium balloon that is about 2 weeks old...... Temp is still about 100. Pups look like they are re-arranging the furniture in her belly. Every so often she will lift her head and look at me with those soulful eyes as if to say "How much longer?"

For some reason I just can't sleep.

I'm ready for you to post that she is already in labor!!

I can understand you not being able to sleep. All the excitement gets your adrenaline going! I've been following your posts since you started posting in the August Babies thread and am filled with anticipation and ready to help in anyway I can if need be.

Go Twinkles!!

I just found this thread and I am more excited than when I posted on the August Babies thread.
Any news??????????
I really don't think I will be getting any rest today, or work... for that matter either.
I will be spending my time here.

I wish you the best of luck. Whelping is a nerve-racking experience for me, although very exciting as well. Fortunately I've got a couple of very nice friends who always help me out when Rubi is on labour. Will be taking care of the whelping or is somebody helping you.
Can't get to here more news from you and see pics of the lil ones.

This is the first chance I have had to post today - unfortunately it is not because Twinkles has been in labor. All's quiet on the home front (maybe it's the calm before the storm?). Twinkles slept peacefully all night in her bed next to the couch, where I slept. I put a leash on her that was around my wrist, in case she got up and I didn't hear her..... Ollie was sleeping in the big chair across the room, but sometime during the night he got in her bed and when I woke up this morning, he was sleeping in her bed, "spooning" her (hey, isn't this how we got in this mess?). It was so cute. It was like he was trying to comfort her. Anyway, she has been quiet all day, no panting, just resting, going out to pee or poo; still has watery stools, but not constant diarrhea. Grampy came by to visit and she was glad to see him - even wanted to play a little.

I have been taking her temp since day 57. It has been 99.4 during the day and goes up to 100 to 100.6 at night. Yesterday it was 99.4 during the day went to 99.8 at night then this morning it went up to 100.2, which is different than any other day, if that means anything. No other signs of anything. Active puppies, still producing colostrum, and clear mucous from vulva.

Any ideas? If she were human, I'd take her for a bumpy ride in a jeep or walk through the mall. How do you get labor to start in dogs?

What is her temp tonight? The temp will make a big spike, usually higher than it's been since you've been taking it, and then a big fall. They don't all go by that but my girls pretty much did. Anything lower than 98.4 is usually a very good indicator that labor will begin within 12 to 24 hours.

Don't worry, at least you know that she eventually will have to deliver those puppies.
