| What is a good weight to breed?? I was just wondering, if you have a 7 pound female and wanted to breed her, what would be a good or safe weight for the male?? Or what would be the biggest size male you could breed a female without risking or endangering her life? I don't feel comfortable breeding a female that is under 5 pounds and thats pushing it for me, I always want the female to be in the 6-7pound range.

| I bred my 7lb female to a 3lb male and still ended up with a c-setion. I think that it depends on the dog and what is in the background of each dog. |

| Same here My female weighed right at 7 lbs and I bred her to a 3 lb male, I thought everything would be just fine. She ended up only having one pup and a c-section!!! It was an experience I will never forget!

| I prefer breeding like to like or the male a bit under. My studs are 5 - 5 1/2 lbs and my girls range from 5lbs - 6 1/2 lbs

| I would want the smallest male possible (with a good sperm count) so the pups would remain within the standard. I would also want to know the size of the males' parents and grandparents. As earlier posted, the size of the female doesn't always guarantee a natural delivery. We've had a couple of 3 pounder moms give birth naturally recently. Your vet could examine her and give you a good idea about whether he thinks she will deliver naturally or not. Of course, the more puppies she has the better so I would mate her at least twice 48 hours apart with a male (not too young or too old) with a good sperm count. Every whelping is a risk no matter what the size of the female or the male. |

| Kimberly, that is a great answer...you get CONSISTENCY that way. When you breed a 8 lb girl to a 3 lb boy, sure you may get a 5 lb girl you want to keep in your breeding program, but now she can produce a range of teenie to large depending on who she is bred to. Doing it the way you do it (and I do it)..you will develop consistency in size, and eventually there will be no more surprises, LOL

| The weight of male and female should never be the only point for breeding . What I evaluate before breeding is the quality of the male because I always want the puppies to be beautifuller than their own parents . |
