I would want the smallest male possible (with a good sperm count) so the pups would remain within the standard. I would also want to know the size of the males' parents and grandparents. As earlier posted, the size of the female doesn't always guarantee a natural delivery. We've had a couple of 3 pounder moms give birth naturally recently. Your vet could examine her and give you a good idea about whether he thinks she will deliver naturally or not. Of course, the more puppies she has the better so I would mate her at least twice 48 hours apart with a male (not too young or too old) with a good sperm count. Every whelping is a risk no matter what the size of the female or the male. |
