| Stud Question.... I've seen it mentioned to first time breeders, to find a stud near by and pick a nice stud to use. I just have a question. How common is it for reputable breeders to allow the use of their studs to inexperienced newbies to breed their bitches to? Is it common? Secondly, how hard is it to get the use of a champion stud? What hoops does the breeder usually have to jump through to get to use a ch. stud? |

| studs There are many reputable breeders who allow pet breeders to use their studs..and show breeders also. I gave alot of thought to this when I first got my studs. You have to weed out the people who are not serious, breeding on a lark or "vacation money type breeders. I know a number of show breeders in MD/VA who offer champions to the public...too new here in Florida. It is good to start by talking about your goals..if you say you want to breed a litter to sell for a whole bunch of money, give your kids the experince of seeing pups born etc, etc, expect the door to be shut in your face. If you say you are interested in breeding a quality litter, learning all you can, willing to be mentored, spay/neuter/limited/ on the ones you do not keep, you are more likely to get a welcome. If you take a 10 pound, flopped eared female who has nothing to contribute to the breeding, (all Yorkies are wonderful, not all should be bred) you are wasting your time. If you present the breeder with an average female of average pedigree, you have a step to build on and they are more likely to help you. Show your face at some shows, tell breeders you want to learn all they will share. Don't start by asking to use their studs. Many will be very rude and ignore you and a few will remember they did not invent Yorkies in their basement and needed help at one time also. It is not an overnight thing, you have to show how sincere you are and they will be watching to see if you mean what you say. Good Luck Last edited by YorkieRose; 04-08-2005 at 01:02 PM. |

I'm not asking these questions for myself. I just curious. Of all of the breeder's I've been in contact with, none of them have even been willing to TALK with me regarding what their rules/practices are regarding the use of their stud, since I'm new to the show world. SO I just assumed it wasn't very common for reputable breeders to allow the use of their ch. studs to newbie breeders. Thanks for the info | |

| Great Information! That was Great Information from YorkieRose. I agree not all Yorkies should be bred. There are a lot of members on this site that just decide to breed their pets for the wrong reasons! It's nice to see some one else who shares the same views. I don't mean to embaress you maybe I should have sent a private message instead? But you always give very sound advice. Breeding is a sore subject with me after running into so many Bad Breeders! I'm thankful that my own Breeder took me under her wing, she too is a good mentor with good information. |

| studs I was talking to Ruth Genkins one time..I asked her this same question. How could I do better when no one would help me? She said she did allow pet breeders to use her Ch. Gentries Jubliee Eagle to imporve their lines. It is all a matter of getting to know breeders and earning their trust...and I know areas of the country are different. PLUS, what some say they do and what they actually do are two different things. Many are afraid to say they let pet breeders use their males..afraid of being talked about. People are going to talk about you in the dog world, so you might as well do as you please and please yourself. |

| Thanks for all this information! I'm considering getting into showing in a few years (like ten? And obviously, not with Tia lol) but it really seems very overwhelming. For now, I'm just trying to learn as much as I can. I copied this information into my file, I really appreciate it!
