| question about nursing mother i need some help. my female is nursing her first litter, they where born january 19 th. today she is panting like she is thirsty and she is restless. going in and out of her cage and running around. i think she was biting one of the puppies because it was crying. i have her on puppyfood because she is nursing. is she lacking something in her diet for her to be acting this way? i called the vets but they are closed. could someone tell me what to do? |

| You need to call and get her to a vet ASAP.It could be eclampsia. I would get mine to a vet. There has to be someone you could call. Or a 24 hour vet? Has she been doing this all day? How many puppies is she nursing? The list of questions could go on. I have had eclampsia it is not a good thing they will get very restless panting, fever running around then to staggering and collapse.Anything beyond normal behavior shoudl be looked into! |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | 011011 Is RIGHT ! I'm not a breeder but a member here described those same symptoms very recently - you need to go to the VET ASAP - IF yours is closed - find an emergency vet .... They can give her a calcium shot but you need to ACT NOW..... I hope the breeders see this....actually - I hope you are at the vet as I type this ....this can be fatal. GOOD LUCK !!! When you have time after you get your mommy better....Go to this thread to read up on this - http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=eclampsia it's pretty scary but if you catch it in time - she should be ok....

| Oh how sad. some thing must be wrong for her to act that way. It could be her or maybe some thing is wrong with one of her puppies. I would take them all in to get checked. please keep us posted on this. I hope all is well. |

| my maltese had this with her last litter, and it was the most scareiest thing i ever had to witness, she shook, she had seisures, she had a bad fever, she could not stand on her own, we got her into the vet, he had to give her 3 shots of calicium before she snapped out of it, he then had to give us iron supplements, and she could not feed her babies after that because it would have killed her.........................so please a vet as soon as possible! please keep us posted

| I agree you must get her to a vet asap. Take the pups from her and set them up in a nursery. get ready to start to care for them until mom can. |

| I should add we only had 2 puppies that is why we let her go back to nursing them. first one would nurse while I fed the other one and we rotated. |

| she seems to be back to normal. we locked her in her cage with her babies and now she seems to be ok. i let her outside to run and i think it might be because she wants outside. i think it was anxiety but if it happens again, i'll get her straight to the emergency vets ASAP. thanks alot |

| I hate to be a trouble maker, but I would like to know what you are waiting for? This condition can come on so quick, and can cost you not only your puppies, but the mommy to. Is there a reason you dont feel it is importian enough to take her in now? I mean by waiting you could be making the biggest mistake ever. Dont wait, go now, it could be your furbabies life, and that is not worth the risk

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Thanks for the update - now that you're back - did you read the link I posted back at the beginning of your thread ? Please go read up on Eclampsia - and maybe it will help you know the signs.... I actually think she needs to be seen by a vet - do you have a weekend vet lined up or an emergency vet to go to in case she starts doing this again ? Quote:

| no i don't think your a trouble maker or i wouldn't be here asking for advise. my dog is acting ok and maybe it was just my imagination but she seems ok now. she is feeding her babies and acting normal. i WILL take her if i see a EM vet if i see anymore signs of trouble. i love my dog and i wouldn't put her in any harm. thanks for being concerned, i'm glad there are people there to help me |
