CONGRATULATIONS!!!! What do you mean, exactly that she doesn't have a lot of milk. If he's by himself, he doesn't have to fight with siblings to eat. Is he gaining weight? One thing I like to do for Gracie is boil a chicken and feed that to her mixed with rice...like a soup. Are you giving yours calcium suppliments? This will keep her from being too worn down. Can't wait to see pictures of the boy!

oh gosh robin, congrats! i have been watching for you to post that you had new babes...well txshopper is right...if he is the only one in the litter, he doesnt need a huge milk supply. she is most likely producing enough for her litter size. if she had 3 or more pups, she'd probably be bursting. just keep a check on her. squeeze her teat with your finger and see if you see a milk dot come out. if so, she is fine. squeeze a teat he hasnt been recently latched onto to really see. congrats and good luck!

She just doesnt have alot of milk , Some of her teats are not even swollen, and the few are just barely swollen, I have not been giving her alot of calcium supp for all the talk about too much calcium can give her eclampsia, I have been giving her a heap TB of cottage chees 2-3 times of week.
She has been on 27% protein, 18% fat dog food.
pups birth weight was 6 on digital scale now its 5 3/4 is this Normal? I have started giving him some Esiblac 2-3 times a day, and how do you measure where to dock his tail and how do you deal with an overProtective mom , I have had them to keep licking the tail and get it started bleeding again?

Thanks Robbie, the support on this site by you gals are worth more than I can express! I can squeeze a few dots out of the slightly swelled teats but not a lot. I just want him to gain and he has lost a 1/4 oz? He weighed 6 on my digital scale and today he weighs 5 3/4?

Hi, I havent bred before but from reading here this is what i found recommended for milk supply , giving her some goats milk. Aslo from debbie jensens whelping info site she recommends giving dam 2 teaspoons of dark beer (or light) for a 9lb dog to aid in producing milk.
For the tail docking I've seen yorkierose recommend the clamp and twist method. those that have used it say its best, no stitches needed and no bleeding.
Congrats on your boy!

robin,
i wouldnt worry over losing 1/4 oz right after birth. some of it may have been fluid loss in his tiny system. now if he continues to lose i would be concerned. i think a 6 oz birth weight is good for a yorkie. if he drops down to 5 or less, you will def want to see your vet and supplement. if your seeing a few milk dots, then she has adequate milk for him. sounds like you are doing every thing just fine. the cottage cheese is good to that you're giving. i'd give it a little more often though. keep us posted.
