| I am not a breeder but from what I have read 5 pounds would be the minimum for a female. |

Weight is only one consideration when determining whether to breed. In a female; she should be above 5 pounds, but you must consider if she comes from a long line of free whelpers, make sure that she is examined (sonogram) to ensure that her reproductive organs are in good shape, and can carry puppies to term (she may concieve 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or even 6 puppies). In a female and male both must be within breed standard; and a good representation of the breed and free of faults and genetic defects.

| Generally, the rule of thumb is not to breed a female under 5 pounds. However, the weight of the female alone is not enough. You also have to take into consideration her pelvic structure and the line of the other dogs in her line. (I.e. For all you know, she may be a 5 pound dog from a line of 3 lb smaller dogs.) |

| In my family, we never bred any yorkie female smaller than 5 pounds. In my own breeding i am planning not to breed any female smaller than 6 pounds anymore. I have a bunch of experiences that made me decide that . Usually most "responsible" breeders will say never to any female smaller than 5 pounds. Also there is the other end of thread as well: withing the standard ... no larger than 7 pounds! XOXO
