| Considering Breeding I currently have one male Yorkie who has been neutered. I am considering studying the breeding process and eventually buying other Yorkies. How do I begin to educate myself on breeding? I have no experience. I once assisted a Basset Hound with birth, but it was an emergency and I had to just wing it. The reason why I want to breed is because I LOVE Yorkies, HATE puppy mills and can't stand it that people are paying up to $3,000 for such a loving companion. I'd like to keep prices more reasonable so more people can enjoy the love of a Yorkie. I have land and indoor space and I could buy whatever else is needed. I do not want to just dive in with complete ignorance, so what is the best way to begin the education process? Thank you.

| i agree on having a mentor. Even though everyone is helpful on here... it would be in your best interest to get a local mentor that can help guide you through the learning process.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Yeah, I have two Yorkies now who I would not breed but since the OP mentioned it I figured I'd ask just in case another Yorkie happened to come into my life I read somewhere else that you should get a mentor but didn't know how to go about it....is FIDebra Deb Siller? Yeah, I've been on here since I got my two Yorkies (wish I had joined before I got them but that's okay and beside the point)and I've been reading up about it... Quote:

I also agree about finding a mentor. I talked at great length about breeding with two breeders. One especially was encouraging to me. She would give me so much information each time we talked, I had to make notes. She even helped me find a complimentary male and went with me to pick him out. That was going above and beyond but she just loves Yorkies and was very supportive. Also read, read, and re-read. I learned a lot right here on YT, especially about what can go wrong, since so many come here for help in emergencies. I also found lots of books to help. I bought several used ones online using Amazon.com.

| Mentor I have a friend with 5 years of breeding Maltese and something else...two separate breeds, not together..LOL. She learned from her mom, who has been breeding for 30 years. She said she can help me. I won't be ready for at least 6 months or more. So, I'm gathering info and learning. Thanks for replies.
