Confused Shipping

How many breeders refuse to ship? My dh & I have received some flack about not shipping. We prefer to hand deliver after at least meeting prospective "parents". Have many of you received the same reception from other sites to post/list? We have also found many brokers that don't seem to give a *&^@ about where our babies go...in fact, telling us that shipping is required as they have customers world wide. Well, knowing a little bit about overseas quarantine (up to 6mo in some countries) in many countries raises my eyebrows. I guess what I am asking is do you, ship. If so, how do you wrap your brain around the fact that they (the babies) are being placed in a case/kennel and sent away on a plane, train, bus, ect... I am not looking to be critical, I'm trying to understand how to handle such demands. We are really bad about attaching human emotions to animals, so we don't know if this is the way it is or that we are being over-sensitive. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OFFENSE, this is a question out of PURE need for knowledge and comprehension. Thank you, Jon & Sheila

I don't ship my puppies either...I ask that the new family either come to my home to pick up their new baby or they can fly in and I will gladly meet them at the airport...then they can come to my home, get their puppy and fly it home in the cabin with them.

You mentioned brokers...do you sell your puppies to brokers?

Default More Questions

TY....my dh has to go to Miami next week & would not have a problem taking one of our babies with him; that is after they have completed the application & reference request. Is that asking toooo much? Otherwise we drive our pups to them after they have passed the app & ref requirements. Are we being "too protective" ? thanks, j & s

I've shipped puppies many times, and while I do prefer to meet the buyers in person, sometimes that's really not possible. And they're great homes that shouldn't be missed out on.

I've shipped in from Japan, Hungary, Ukraine and throughout the US and I've not once had a negative incident.
The last Yorkie I had shipped in was from Budapest, Hungary and she waltzed out of the crate like she owned the joint when she arrived. Very outgoing, very friendly, confident, CLEAN. Her topknot hadn't budged either (11 weeks old I believe, I'd have to check her FCI papers again).

If there are other options, GREAT. If not though, I wouldn't be opposed to shipping in good weather!

I have shipped out and in and never had a problem. I am vry particular where my babies go and how they are treated when traveling. Sometimes I use a flight attendant that hand carries them in cabin. Sometimes I personally escort my puppies in cabin. My puppies are so cheap, people can afford to do that. i have never had a problem except I got one in that was matted and dirty once but that was the breeders fault not the airlines.

I will never ship. I actually have a friend that can travel in cabin with my yorkies if need be to get them where they need to go - I do this to get them to and back from my handler. I will never ship.

A very interesting question.

Some years ago I was in the cat fancy for breeding and showing. Some of us have bought showcats in the whole world, from USA, Hungary, U.K. and others. In the cat world the most breeders ship their cats. You must give references to got one of these cats. A friend of mine was the only person who had bad experiences. She buyed a cat in the USA from a very reputable breeder. The cats was 4 months old. The sad thing was, that the cat was not put on a direct flight and the cat kennel stayed half a day outside on a windy rainy airport. The airport personal was not able to be carefully with this little cat . My friend got the cat and after 3 days the little one was very ill. She put him to the vet and the little one died. The breeder was very shocked and shipped my friend an 6 months old cat to replace the first one. My friend mustn´t paid the second one (which had the same quality as the first one) and the shipping costs. And the breeder took the cat on a direct flight with no stops and said never using another flight withs stops or changes to another airplane.

I myself was never shipping a cat, I sold them only in gemany. But I have buyed 2 cats in USA too. The first came with her breeder who is a cat show judge - she was judging a show here in germany. The second one come to the airport where I can pick him up quickly.

But I think I would never do it. I want to meet the breeders personally before buying a cat or dog and want to see the living area.

I would prefer not to ship and have personally met some of the buyers at the airport. Sometimes, shipping is the best option--as opposed to being stuffed under a small seat. Many of the flights have been cancelled since this economy. Sometimes I send the husband--he has driven all over delivering puppies.

I haven't started breeding yet, but, I have already decided mine will NOT be shipped. Someone can either fly to pick up the pup, or pay for me to fly and take the pup personally. It's just as cheap for someone (if not cheaper) to fly themselves to pick up their pup, than to pay to have the puppy shipped, and it's a lot better for them to ride in coach than in cargo

I shipped puppies for twenty years with never a problem. But, I only shipped on direct flights -- no lay overs and no switching planes. That is where most problems arise when shipping dogs. I drove my dogs to Dallas (a hub) and shipped on AA, so I could get a direct flight to almost any destination. On puppies I shipped overseas, I insisted buyers pick up their dogs in person and fly them coach. There is no way I would let a puppy sit in customs or quarantine, or switch planes. On puppies I sent to Canada, I would ship the puppy to the closest US airport to their home, and have the buyer pick them up in the US and drive them across the border into Canada. This worked very well for me and my pups never had a single problem. My breed was a larger breed and more robust than a yorkie, though. I may had felt differently had I been breeding yorkies.

I do not ship. I "need" a face to face meeting with the new parents of my furbabies.
