| How young/old can the stud be???? Ok. I'm new to this breeding stuff. I was wondering if anyone knows what a good age is to start breeding the stud? I'm trying hard to find a link online, but I'm getting frustrated trying to find something to let me know when. I have a male who is a little over 6 months old, and we had someone call to see if we might have a male to breed her female with. I haven't returned her call yet, because I wanted to find out how old our male needed to be. I know sounds silly, just really need to know. Thanks to whoever can help me. God bless, Heather |

| Akc? I think the stud has to be over 7 months for the AKC to recognize his offspring. You might try their site. I think it's on there.

| As far as I know the AKC will recognize a litter from a stud that is 7 months or older. |

| Even if AKC regs at such an early age, a male Yorkie needs to be fully mature to use him properly for breeding. ONE BAD EXPERIENCE AND THAT BOY CAN BE RUINED FOR LIFE AND WILL NOT MATE!!! The first mating of a male should be fully supervised by totally experienced breeders. A virgin female is not the best candidate for proving him--if the female is proven and no puppies are produced from the mating you know it probably is NOT her. Then you have to find someone who will take a chance on losing a heat cycle to find out whether he is shootin' blanks or not. Has he ever been tested for STD's?If he doesn't produce could be a medical problem. I gotta shut up. By this time I know you are tired of me on my soapbox saying "There is more to breeding that putting 2 dogs together to make puppies!" |

| This is where a good breeder can give you good info. Your boy might pump 'em out like Fertile Tertile. But, he could have thyrodid problems, STD's, only 1 testicle, be a carrier of genetic syndromes/diseases/deformities. Those things have to be tested and be cleared before EITHER parent is bred. Say, you bought a little male-he is 8 months old and starting to be interested in doing "That". You notice he has a slight limp in his back leg. Off to the vet; x-rays needed. "Oh, doc, how much for that?" well, we have to anesthetize him so he will not be uncomf. "Oh, doc, how much for that?" maybe $250.00 for the o.r., the assistant, anesthesia, pre-asnesthesia and the actual X-ray (Now, we have to add the X-ray tech's charge, cost of the film and using the machine). kA-CHING kA-CHING The diagnosis "Sorry, your boy has LCP disease1" "what is that" Legg-Calvin-Perthes disease of the hip. and, oh, by the way, it is genetic AND HE SHOULD NEVER BE USED FOR BREEDING!" by NOW, YOU HAVE THE $1000.00 PURCHASE PRICE, his care and up-keep for 6 months, your heart is breaking (priceless) so maybe a total of $1800.00-$2500.00 and you still cannot breed the dog. And he will get worse and surgery to remove the hip joint is around $2000.00. So you find a wonderful vet tech who will love him, give him to her, pay what she pays for the surgery and then hope he walks fine without that hip joint and makes a therapy dog. BTW, this is the story of one of my little boys a few years ago. Could somebody hand me my cane so I can hobble down off the soapbox again? |

| Thanks!!!! You were alot of help. He's definately tested fine for everything, but most vets would rather not have breeders, because of the pet population being so out of control. We have a very healthy male, and he's already been trying to get on our 2 females that are only 5 months old. I definately have watched them closely. I'm not going to be one of those breeders that do it for the money. Our dogs are very very loved. We have 4 females and the one male. We have already bred our older female (she's 3 years old). She has produced 2 beautiful litters of 6 pups in each litter. But we were using a friend's male. They were great together, but we got ourself a male so we won't have to keep paying stud service. Our male is such a doll!!! Our females aren't tiny either, so I know they will do great to be pups. We kept 2 females outta the last litter we had back in January. So, they will hit around 8 lbs also, if not close to 10 lbs. Anyways, thanks a bunches for the advice. God bless, Heather |

| My boy is 7 months old and he was trying at 5 months but I would never let him have enough time to get the job done. AKC requires the sire to be 7 months old OR DNA before they recoi=gnize the litter BUT a male can produce a litter as soon as his testicles drop. As early as 4 months. Some males catch on quick, some don't. |

| Heather, If you have 2 females expected to be over standard, please spay them. Since your not in it for the money, I am assuming you will breed for standard. Standard is under 7 pounds. |

| agree I have to agree with Lovefor3yorkies. Try to at least stick to the standard. Getting up there to 10 pounds is very large. JMO
