Yorkie Splash and Shine~THUMBS DOWN! After reading the numerous reviews about how wonderful this Yorkie Splash and Shine product is I decided to give it a shot. So I ordered a sample set and upon receiving it, I noticed how watery the texture of the shampoo was. Although the shampoo lathered nicely, I couldn't help but wonder if I was given a watered-down portion so the seller could give me less but charge the same amount. So my yorkie was lathered up, but after rinsing him off his hair felt horrible! It was if his coat had been stripped of any oils what so ever. Shocked at this result- I immediately reached for the conditioner and was forced to use gobs of it hoping that he would get his silky soft feeling back into his coat. Lastly, as we are sitting here on the couch, I cant help but be over powered by the "old lady" scent my poor boy is stuck with for the next couple of days. I regret wasting my $6.00 on a product with fancy packaging and sub-par quality. If I wanted these same results, I would head to my local Petco and pick up any cheap bottle of shampoo and conditioner there. :thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown |
I'm sorry you didn't care for the product, many here do think it's great. However I, like you, didn't care for the results and now stick with what I know works for us. There are lots of grooming products out there anymore, with many opinions about which is best. Sometimes it is just a matter of experimenting until you find the right product for you and your dog. |
Glad you posted. Its great to hear opposing views to a product. Lots of people on here rave about it. I'm happy with the products I purchase from my groomer and have no need to change. |
That just goes to show you that no product is right for every Yorkie. It is a very individual thing, depending on their coat texture, how oily they are, do they love playing outside or do they stay inside, etc. What works like a miracle on one dog can be all wrong for another. It is the same way with dog food, too. I feel so fortunate that there are many wonderful super premium foods on the market now. But, while one dog thrives on a particular super premium brand, it might give another dog a runny stool, or digestive upsets. It's not that it is a bad product, it is a wonderful product, but it just doesn't work with that particular dog. It's a good thing we have a lot of great choices, because it isn't "one size fits all." It is about finding out which choices on the market are the best, and then looking among those choices to cull and determine which ones will work best for your specific dog. |
I just used mine for the first time last night on all 3 puppies. I posted the other day that I did not understand why everyone raved about the scent, because I could not smell anything, well, when i used it, I fell in love with the smell. The shampoo does have a watery texture, and I think I read somewhere about someone putting it in a suds pump. I plan on buying the suds pump to conserve the shampoo. Baxter (who I think is a red legged yorkie) seemed to look the best after using it. His coat is so straight and shiny now, and smells wonderful. Cooper is much shiner, I can't tell much of a difference with Darcy because she is soft no matter what product I use. Sorry it did not work for you...like the other posters say...not all the products we have for Yorkies work the same. |
Sorry you don't like the product. I just love it. Their coat will fill somewhat waxy with the shampoo (use a suds pump bottle & it will give you suds) but once you add the conditioner it feels just fine. I love the scent that is left on Fancy that lasts for days. I even take it to Petsmart when I get Fancy groomed for them to use.:aimeeyork:animal-pa:thumbup::) |
I love Splash and Shine. Teddy has a long coat and he is pure silk and the Walnut Hill products work so well on him. I love the smell too! Sorry it did not work out for you. As I always say, not every product will fit the needs/preferences of every single customer. I hope you find something you like better for your baby! |
I am so glad you posted! I was beginning to think I had gotten an odd bottle or just had no taste in shampoos. I, too, found it to be very watery, and had to use a lot more than I would normal quality shampoos. I did not find it easy to get a lather going and was not excited about the smell either. I was warned that the hair might feel waxy after use but did not find that so much as I just was missing the softness and shine I was used to. I did not see how long the smell lasted as I used my old shampoo within a couple of days because I wanted that shine back. I hesitate even now, to add a negative review as the developer/vendor is a member here. I know she put a great deal of research and hard work into making her product and is very happy with it herself. But everyone has different preferences. Even human hair products get much different reviews. There is not one forumla to make everyone happy. I guess that is why there are so many brands. I was even more hesitant as she gave me a bottle to test and report back to the forum. I have not done so until now as I did not want to ruin her business. But it seems to have taken off nicely now and I feel an honest review, even one that did not like it at all, only serves to balance the input. In fact, I sort of felt guilty about holding my tongue while so many ordered based only on the good reviews. I love Espree products, especially the Luxury Remoisturizer! I have even used a little of that on my own hair and it tamed my mess nicely too! I use Fluffy Puppy on all puppies and everyone's faces. That way if I do get some accidently in their eyes, no burn. I am currently using Minksheen on my 3, and love it for the shine, softness and the fact that I have gone without my Frontline Plus for over a year with never a flea! Anytime I can skip using harsh chemicals is a plus! I also like Paul Mitchell's dog grooming products, Pet Silk Moisturizing Shampoo is GREAT, and there was another I liked that smelled like fresh baked oatmeal cookies but I can't think of the name right now. So, I am not very particular -- I have lots of shampoos that I love -- but not Yorkie Splash and Shine. BTW -- Ben is pure silk, my late Sadie was a modified silk (some call combination cotton/silk)coat, and I also have a Jack Russell with the typical short hair. I have also had puppies to shampoo. So, I feel like I have a wide range of textures to test shampoos. |
I remembered the Oatmeal cookie smelling grooming products I liked so much -- Cranberry Fields Oatmeal Shampoo and Conditioner. I had bought them from a YT vendor who is no longer on here. But I think another vendor sells these products. I think they may be mde by PetzLife. Is Westbrook Dog still selling here? I am still catching up after my haitus and am not sure who is and who is not still doing business here. I may have to get some more of this just to use occasionally in between Minksheen. I think it would be especially nice for the holidays! |
If you use this product it is worth it to invest in a foamer bottle. Since the consistancy is so watery you waste a lot of product if you don't user a foamer..which makes it last a very long time! |
If I'm not mistaken, on the Yorkie S & S website she states that it will seem waxy at first and that after a few uses, you WILL notice a difference in your yorkie's coat. I was a little taken aback by the feel of Lily's coat with just the shampoo, I let the conditioner sit for about 2 minutes then rinsed. It felt good after that. She's not silky though so I don't know if that makes a difference. |
One thing I've been told as far as the consistency being very watery...natural shampoos will be more watery. There's none of the "junk" added in to make it thicker. This also applies to natural shampoos for humans as well. So it doesn't mean that the product has been watered down. I am glad that you posted your review. It's great to see that we can all be honest here without fear. Every product will not work for every yorkie or every owner. I happen to LOVE the smell of Yorkie Splash and Shine. It left Lulu's hair just as soft as any of the others I've tried as well. I've only used the shampoo & conditioner once but use the Yorkie Sheen twice a day with Lulu's brushings. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Sheen!!! |
I completely agree. :thumbdown:thumbdown I have used it on all four of my yorkies, and found the same thing - very watery, non-silky coat, not a great smell, etc. - and my yorkies each have different coats, and it did not work on any of them. I use Minksheen, and it works great on all my dogs. I will stick with this one!:thumbup: |
I really like this product, that being said , Laci is a VERY cottony coated Yorkie, her fur is super thick and fluffy.. she doesnt really have much shine no matter what I use. Yorkie Splash and Shine is the best I have ever used and I prefer to have less suds from the soap because her coat is hard to rinse. I think you just have to get used to the fact that you dont get that big " suds" effect, but if you use organic shampoo for humans it is really the same. The smell is a bit strong at first but goes away after a few days. |

The watery-er (?) consistency actually does mean that it is watered down. Not necessarily that it was ever a thicker product for sale, but water is still the main ingredient. Just more of it, in the watery formulas. So watered down in the making, not after the fact. Some seem to like the watery consistency, even prefer it, but it does mean you are buying more water. I like the thicker, richer formulas, and then I can water them down if I want to, to make rinsing easier. I never tried the sheen. I do like a good daily spray for brushing. Smart of her to offer it. Glad you found it works well. A good daily brushing/refreshening spray is vital. |

Thanks everyone for posting your opinions. :) First, I am not a miracle maker. :) I just made a shampoo that I like and friends used it and liked it, so I started selling it. No shampoo is perfect. That's why I made a shampoo I like - I hated everything I tried, even Minksheen, and I read sooo many great reviews about it. Anyway, I want to address the watery consistency issue. There is no water added to our shampoo. It is "thin" because there is nothing added to make it thicker. I have come up with a thicker formula, but I am not sure I want to introduce it. the only difference in ingredients is the addition of Vegetable Gum / Glycerin Extract - and while it doesn't make the shampoo THICK, it does make it a bit thicker. Second, there are no regulations on the labeling of pet grooming products. So, there is no guarantee that a label is accurate. It's up to the manufacturer to list ingredients, but no one checks them and they aren't even a requirement. I haven't been able to find an ingredients list for the Espree Hypo-Allergenic Coconut Shampoo shampoo you mentioned. But, I can say that, other than the fragrance added to our shampoo, it is 100% USDA certified organic. As far as the coat texture, some people really don't like the initial reaction. The pH of our shampoo is very high (around 9) and most shampoos are much less than that. So, it does take a bit of getting used to for the coat, especially when many are used to being bathed in shampoos with a pH of around 6. Thanks for all the comments! I know I can't please everyone, but I am glad to see that everyone feels comfortable posting their thoughts! :) |

"Water -- The primary ingredient in all shampoos is water, typically making up about 70-80% of the entire formula. Deionized water, which is specially treated to remove various particles and ions, is used in shampoos. The source of the water can be underground wells, lakes, or rivers." You may be using a product that already contains water,?? but it surely has water in it or it wouldn't be so .... well watery. Finding this curious. Thanks for being so diplomatic in accepting that we did not all have the same experience with your shampoo. To be fair, there is a human shampoo site that gives reviews that all contradict each other too. There are just so many other varibles, probably our own water supply making the most difference in how a shampoo reacts. I do applaud your work to come up with a special formula to meet a need you had and that others have enjoyed as well. |

I think what I thought you meant was that I made soap and diluted it with water (since that's what the OP suggested). |
I understand, you mean no direct water is added. Looked up the saponifying process and found that it basically makes soap, water and glycerine. That probably is part of the water content. "Soap is made by saponifying a fat or oil with a strong alkali. A fat or oil is a triglyceride, which means that three fatty acids of various carbon lengths are attached to a glycerine backbone. The strong alkali is either sodium (for bars) or potassium (for liquids) hydroxide. The saponification process is a simple one-step reaction with no waste generated: the glycerine is split off from the fatty acids, and the fatty acids combine with the sodium or potassium to form soap, while the hydroxide forms water. The result is soap, glycerin and water (no alkali remains). " More water would be in the Aloe Vera as it is normally 96% water. You don't really have to add pure water to have a water content. Almost any liquid winds up having water as a basic ingredient. Sort of like looking at dog food ingredients. Most canned food lists water as the first ingredient. Some of the premium dog foods don't list water but they do list chicken broth -- that is mostly water. I did wonder about the high Ph for the shampoo. It is unusal for the ph to be that high for a dog shampoo. Why did you decide on that and how does it not have detrimental effects? Since you researched I know you have a reason behind this. Just thought I would ask. Too high of a ph is said to have harmful side effects, strip away some of the necessary oils on a dog's skin, and leaving a dog with dry, irritated skin, causing extra itchiness and scratching. Too high of a ph can weaken the hair by breaking the disulfide bonds in hair keratin. Referenced from: About Dog Shampoo | DailyPuppy.com Another site discussed making your own dog shampoo but cautioned that when using Ivory dish detergent (with a ph of 9.5) as one of the ingredients, you must add: 2 teaspoons of white vinegar along with the required teaspoon of glycerin. This will bring the pH down to 6.8 which is well within the realm of a dog’s skin. Dog shampoo-Make your own, easy & inexpensive[B] I brought up that last example as it is close to the Ph of 9 you shampoo has and they are recommending adding vinegar to bring the ph down to 6.8. Not that I want to make my own shampoo with Ivory. :) Thanks! |

I think I am getting bogged down with too much water talk now. :) I am diluting my own conversation. :) |

The pH of a dog's skin is about 7, while the pH of human skin is about 5.5 - it is my understanding that most shampoos have a pH of about 5.5 to 6.5. And, most shampoos make no mention of pH level, human or pet shampoos. Some manufacturers actually re-purpose baby shampoo and bottle it for dogs (from a personal source inside a major pet products retailer). Anyway, I like the way the shampoo works, and thought I would make sure that anyone who wanted to use it would have all of the information. I didn't choose a pH of 9 and try to hit that. I wanted it to be higher than 7 for sure is all. If you think 9 is too high, by all means, don't use it (and, you obviously don't). The reasons I use the shampoo are completely based on my own personal opinions. I like it. :) I like the smell, I like the lather, I like the pH, I like the cleaning ability, and I like the ingredients. I have been using it exclusively for 2 years and love the results every day. After I bathe Catherine, she is soft and smells great and her coat looks fuller (she has fine hair). When I bathe Stitch, his extremely cottony coat lays flat and is shiny and very soft. I just thought I had a great product and I would be absolutely selfish to keep it to myself. If you don't want to use it, that's absolutely fine with me. I sent you a free sample because I hoped that you would like it, too. You don't and that's fine. |
I love love love this for my girls fur. One is cottony and the other is silky. I dont get the waxy part. They are super soft after I dry them. I love the smell and it lasts for a week. I have one dog that likes to lay in the sun. This has made a huge difference on her smell. Perhaps i can finally change her name to something other than Smella Bella..ha ha Sorry it didnt work for you. I can not tell you how many have not worked for me. Its been great for my lil one's itching. They no longer flake and I love the idea of having such a high ph. Gosh Darlene I totally forgot about using foam pump bottle! I have one i can use too!!:thumbup: |

I have not used your products but have heard they are wonderful from a couple of friends. I am happy with what I use so have not really thought to try anything else. |
