Default More Jammies out of Baby Clothes

These onesies I leave the legs on. It keeps Bambi nice and toastie in the winter. I've made quite a few of these for my Bambi. She starts with a Newborn size onesie with feet. She's about 8 inches long and 4 lbs. I found that the fleece ones fit her better but for this step by step I used a cotton onesie. The cotton onesies seem to have too much fabric in the trso that may need some modifying or perhaps a belt with a bow! Anyway, here goes...

I start with a newborn size pajamas with the legs and feet. I use the ones with the snaps. I have no tried one with a zipper, I'm sure there's a way though.

Unsnap all snaps. First thing I do is cut the little feet off, I tried to keep them on bc they're so darn cute. It's best to cut them off though so they don't get caught on your babies feet. I leave as much fabric on the foot as possible so it's easier to level off the hem.

Next I hem the legs.

Then I cut the snaps off on both sides. If you think about it the tummy part vs the back part of your baby's clothes needs less fabric. I do take care not to cut into the ribbing on the next. Then it won't unravel. That will be sewn anyway.

I then pin both sides together. Now I make this for my little girl so the amount I leave open on the bottom isn't that intricate. If you're making this for a boy I would use one of his other shirts to get that sized right. But it would be safe to stop where you baby's ribcage ends.

Then I hem the area that I left unsewn for bathroom necessities.

These particular onesis I got from Walmart on clearance. They happen to have a perfect little tail outline on the backside. I cut that area out.

Then I hem the tail area. And if I'm not mistaken I think that's it! You can see how I have it on my hand/arm how there's extra fabric. I may try to fine tune that this winter, or give her a cute belt. Happy Sewing!

It's not that bad. Deep breath... .

These are easier than making one from scratch and a pattern. So much work and then if they don't fit right!? Oy. I give up.

I think I'm going to try knitting for them this winter. Little scared but we'll see!

Thanks...I needed that...LOL I might just pickup a pair and give it a try. I have seen some of the cutest little jammies like that at Walmart especially around Christmas time and always wondered how we could make them fit. And see...you figured it out for us...hugs and thanks again for sharing

I love it!! Thanks so much for posting this. I'm gonna go out and get some pj's tomorrow and try this out. I've been looking for a step-by-step like this. I think dog clothes is super overpriced and even though im not very good at sewing I like making my own stuff. do you alter baby clothes in any other way? Would love to see what else you can do.

I made some undershirts bc layering is key here in Wisconsin. I just got a three pack of onesies and modified them. This was a tad bit dangerous though. The fabric was getting pulled into the machine and I sewed through my finger! The things we do for our pups.

I want to try to make a dress for Bambi out of baby clothes. I may browse the clearance and see what I can do.

I live in Chicago so I know all about the cold. My poor roxy was shivering her buns off today in 70degree weather. I'm going to hit up the thrift store tomorrow and get some baby clothes and see what I can do with it. I'll post pictures of anything worth showing off.
