5 week old Ellie's 1st night at home
 

We got back home last night around 10:00 and started getting her settled in. The kids were so excited to see her though my hubby didn't really know what to think of her!

I fixed her a little food around 10:30 and she ate about 1cc - 2cc. About 11:30 she started licking and chewing (gumming) my fingers so I decided to try to feed her a little more. She ate a little but not as much as the first feeding.

Around 11:45 I put her in her bed and got her settled in for the night while I got ready for bed and cleaned up from her "dinner". When I walked back into our bedroom, her crate door was open and she was missing! No worries...hubby had her snuggled under the covers on his chest! She ended up falling asleep on his neck! It was so cute that I had to snap a picture (it's posted)!

Everytime I placed her in her crate, she cried so I decided that we would both get a little more sleep if I moved her bed into my bed between hubby and I. I was wrong! She slept in 30 - 45 minute spurts and would wake up and want to play for about 10 - 15 minutes!

I offered her food every 1 1/2 - 2 hours when she was awake and about 1:30 this morning she pooped for the first time! Never thought I would be excited to see poop! It was firm, but it stuck to her feet and tummy! I took a warm baby wipe and cleaned her up (after bagging a sample for the vet).

About 4:30 this morning I started to get a little worried because she wasn't eating and hadn't eaten since about 2:00. I gave her a little NutraCal just to play it safe and snuggled her back into her blanket.

Daddy got up with her about 6:00 and was playing with her on the tray that I removed from the bottom of her crate ( I did this so I could safely place a puppy pad so that she couldn't pull it up...picture posted). She went wee and poo on the tray...this is a good thing right? She has now pooped twice in less than 12 hours and it's still firm!

About 7:30 she was walking around the bed between hubby and I when she decided that she needed to go wee again! Nice! LOL I was very surprised by her new Daddy's reaction..."That's ok little girl, it was time to wash the sheets again anyway." That may be the case, but from now on there will be a puppy pad under her when she is walking around anywhere! LOL

At 8:00 I tried again to get her to eat, with no luck...more NutraCal! We gathered all of her goodies and got her ready for her trip to see Dr. Lynne...

Vet Highlights:
Weight: 14oz
Temp: 100.4
Ears: Clear
Eyes: Clear

Dr Lynne recommended that I take her off of Cesar Puppy ASAP and put her on something with more protein. He also told me to discontinue the wormer that the breeder gave me until we find out exactly what parasites she has. He also stated that it would hurt to give her a dose of BeneBac to help with her food digestion. I was told to feed her 6 - 7 times a day and that she should be consuming at least 2cc - 3cc at each feeding.

Next stop, Petco for different food! I decided to go with Eukanuaba Puppy Chicken and Rice. Once we got home (around 11:30)I placed a little on a spoon for her and she showed a little interest but wasn't impressed! I tried mixing it with a little water...again, not impressed! In a last ditch effort to get her to eat without me force feeding her, I placed about 1 tablespoon on the palm of my hand...She is always licking my fingers and hand so I figured what the heck!...She sucked it down in about 5 - 10 minutes!

All in all I would say that we are off to a pretty good start! She is eating, peeing, pooping, sleeping, playing, and seems to recognize my voice already!

That's more detailed care than I remember giving my skin kid. LOL.

To entice her to eat...you can buy puppy formula and moisten the food with that and be careful not to give her nytrical too frequently. Her tummy is small and you don't want her to fill up on that..

Actually it doesn't sound like you need my advice at all. :rolleyes:

LOL...I guess that is just the Mom coming out in me!

I tried the puppy milk and she didn't like it at all! As for not giving too much NutraCal...am only giving a drop the size of a pea...like you said I don't want to fill her up but I do want to keep her sugar up an something on her tummy!

Any tips on getting her to drink water?! She won't drink that either!...I think this little girl is going to be spoiled! HAHAHA

hey there.....sounds like she already love her new family.......you are doing a great job........as for the water....try putting a little clear Karo syrup in the water...it will sweeten it and help with sugar drops too

Did you warm the food up a bit?

I'd still add water to the food and warm it...keep water out if she wants it, but if nothing else...she'll get some when she eats.

I'm betting within a couple of weeks...she won't be sleeping in any crate. LOL.

bchgirl...did you check out the latest pics that I have posted of her?! There is now a new one of her sleeping on my tummy...she is laying on her back totally knocked out!

FYI...She just went wee on the puppy pad for the first time about 20 minutes ago! yea!!

A little late and a dollar short I'm sure but:
pedyalyte (sp) for dehydration.
find out what kibble mom was being fed but it in the blender and grind it to a fine meal mix it with a little goats milk (found in the condensed milk aisle)
I used to show Wire fox terriers years ago and this is what I started my puppies
on at 5 weeks. My babies were still having a morning and night nurse from Mum
at this age with full weaning at 7 weeks.
I'd also buy the jar baby chicken (not meat from a baby chicken;) it's a long storyLOL) from the baby food aisle. Have some baby rice cereal on hand too
the box one you can mix with pedyalyte.

Sounds like you are doing a fantastic job. Just stay with it. I always fed puppy goat milk from Petmart. They loved it. I would blend some kibble,( I would use a high protein kibble like INNOVA for puppies) Grind it in a blender and some goat milk let it soften then warm it in the micro..It has to be mushy for a pup of that age..Good luck sound like you are doing fantastic

Last night was a little better and Ellie let Mommy get a little sleep! She slept from about 11 to 3 this morning. She isn't eating very well at night but she did the same thing the first night and then ate about every 3 hours during the day yesterday! Just watching her really close.

She still isn't drinking water very well, so I force fed her about 6cc last night and if she isn't drinking again today will do the same thing. She is still going pee and I keep checking her skin for dehydration...so far so good!

She is winning when she needs to go potty so I have started placing her on a puppy pad everytime she wakes up and so far she hasn't had anymore accidents on the bed!

Forgot to mention...

I do have one question for anyone out there who may know the answer...She pooped for me last night before bed but id was a different color and slightly softer texture than the first poop that I saw from her. I wouldn't call it runny but it is softer and is lighter in color. The poop on the first night was hard and very dark. Should I be concerned?

Glad she is doing so well. She is eating different things and this could change her poop, to play it safe I would just drop a sample off at your vets to have it tested. As far as the drinking goes have you thought of trying a bottle?

It sounds like you're doing a great job with her!!! The change in food could be the difference in her stool. As long as it isn't diarrhea, I don't think there should be a problem, but you might want the vet to do a stool sample just in case.

Also, you might want to try giving her a small ice cube and see if she likes it. Sometimes they will lick the ice cube when they won't drink water. You could also freeze from pedialyte into cubes if this works.

Also, my Sissy is on colostrum for her intestinal issues. Since this is a product from the mother's milk and I open the capsule into a tablespoon or so of warm water, something like this might be a way for her to drink a little.

I have tried the bottle, but she doesn't like it. I end up squeezing the bottle to "force" the fluid into her mouth.

We tried puppy milk last night in the bottle and I managed to get 1 tablespoon in her...wonder if that had anything to do with her sleeping longer?

No more poop since last night but she is still going pee.

Still force feeding water, but she just started whimpering to let me know she was hungry!

This has been a really weird day! I was still trying with no luck to feed her @ 1:00 this afternoon. I was able to get her to take a few bites but nothing really to speak of so I gave her 1/4 teaspoon of NutriCal and tried again around 1:30. At this feeding she ate about 1 tablespoon, which is the most she has eaten all day!

After her tummy was full, she took a little nap and was ready to play with Daddy's hands! Went potty (this time she pooped and it was a little softer than I would like so we are starting Pedialite) and took another nap!

When she woke about 4:30 she was whimpering so I assumed she needed to potty (as she always does when she wakes up) but she didn't. :confused: I laid down on the floor with her and the food that was left from her other feedings was about 2 feet away from where we were laying...she made a bee-line for it and didn't stop until the plate was clean...about 1.5 tablespoons!

This girl is wearing me out! Just as soon as I start to get worried about her, she pulls herself around and turns into the rambunctious puppy! I love this little girl!

Sounds like you are doing a great job with her! In FL you can't sell a puppy before 8 weeks and they have to have a health certificate. I've heard that a lot of yorkie breeders don't like to let them go home before 12 weeks.

OH MY GOD! You must have been so scared!!! Bumping this for you!

Don't panic. It is normal for you to see the worms after she has been dewormed. Diarrhea is also normal, too.

You are doing a great job job with her. Just keep doing what you are doing. She will do much better when the food she eats isn't being consumed by worms. Her mother is obviously infested with worms. :mad:

Be very sure to wash your hands thoroughly as roundworms are contagious to humans.

I have bagged the one that I just helped her pass, and I found another in her bed this morning that I had already bagged before I knew what it was. It was dried out, so she must have passed it last night.

Is there anything that I can do the the loose stools? She whimpers when she is going so I know that it has to be uncomfortable for her...not to mention that the smell is horrid!

With a puppy as young as Ellie, I wouldn't dare try to treat her diarrhea yourself. I'd ask your vet what he recommends. Hopefully once the worms are gone, her stool will firm up.

I really think just what you are doing, Pedialite and frequent meals, is excellent. That will help make sure she doesn't dehydrate from the diarrhea.

Thanks again! The vet will be getting a call first thing in the morning! I know puppies get worms but I was a little taken back when I saw her pass it because that, I have never seen! My biggest concern is with the tummy upset and the risk of dehydration.

Do you think that 10cc is a proper amount to be giving her? At this point should I be focusing more on the feeding or the hydration? If I am not able to get her to eat as she should, how often can I give NutriCal?

Guess this means she gets to sleep on Mommy's tummy under my hoodie again tonight! This seems to be her new favorite spot...she is there now and dreaming about chasing something! :asleep:

How is little Ellie today?

Ellie is doing much better today! We have had a rough couple of days though it seems!

Sunday she was very "sleepy" and slept most of the day. I gave her NutriCal and Kayro every 2 hours and force fed her 5cc of Pedialite every hour. She finally perked up about 10:30 and had her first BM of the day...still loose.

Called the vet first thing Monday morning and he said that stools came back with only roundworms but that she was infested! He gave her Strongid and said that I needed to repeat the dose in 2 weeks.

Yesterday (still Monday) things weren't looking much better. Her urine output was greatly reduced and it was dark yellow in color...still having loose stools of a pudding texture. I called the vet again (this makes the 2nd time) and he said to up her Pedialite intake to 6cc every 45 minutes. This didn't seem to help and by 3:30 yesterday afternoon, her stools were very watery...time to call the vet again!

He had me check her gums (still pink but not as pink as I would have liked to have seen them) and check her for dehydration. She wasn't dehydrated but still very "sleepy" and not very active...still having to force feed her.

I upped her Pedialite to 5cc (this seems to be as much as I could get her to take before she started wearing it!) every 30 minutes. By 9:00 last night her urine was clear again and her output was back to normal. At 10:00 she seemed to be a little perkier so I fixed her a "buffet" of chicken and rice, canned puppy food, crushed dry kibble, and pedialite and placed it all in front of her...let her sniff it out and see what she chose...She went straight for the dry kibble and has been eating it since! She is eating on her own and drinking Pedialite from the bowl!...Her poop is back to normal, firm again, and free of worms!

She is back to her playful nose biting self! Mom was going a little crazy but Ellie seems to have taken it like a champ! She slept last night for 5 hours...she thinks Mom needed a little sleep after all that worry she caused!
