Yorkies in ohio?! Hi, Im new here!! I love yorkies, But I cant find ANYWHERE in Ohio to buy one! I have been looking for about 3 years now, anyone know where I could get one??? The ones I have found around here are ridiculously expensive, or mixed with something else. Like yorkie chis. Help would be appreciated!! Thanks all!! Elizabeth |
Hmm... Have you been looking in the newspaper ads? Pure Yorkies can be expensive, usually from $800 to $1500 or more even... Here's one I found: http://www.puppydogweb.com/kennels/yorkie_rice.htm This list of Yorkie breeders includes quite a few from Ohio: http://yorkshire-terrier.com/lacy/breeders.htm Good luck! :) |
Lizzy, Have you considered adopting a yorkie from the rescues? I'm with Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue. We have many Yorkies available, all over the country. Go to www.ytnr.com. There are rescues listed there, and if there aren't any shown in your area, there are many more that haven't been posted as of yet. E-mail one of the state directors, whose e-mails are on the website and you can fill out a form that will let you know when there is one near you. Be very careful buying from a breeder you haven't heard of. I bought three from a seemingly knowledgable breeder, but they all have many health problems, and I paid A LOT for each of them. Yorkies can have all kinds of health problems, so watch it...there are tons of bad breeder, puppy millers and backyard breeders out there, especially in the Midwest. You can research a newspaper ad or breeder at nopuppymills.com, look at the AKC suspended breeders list. Also, AKC has some breeders listed. A show breeder is best, since they know what to look for and are held accountable by other breeders on the show circuit. Rescues have some wonderful dogs, adults and pupppies. Some are special needs and some just need a new home after a pet parent has died or become ill or moved. -Victoria Broussard |
:) Hi, thanks for your replies!! I thought about getting a yorkie from a rescue, but they have these applications you have to fill out that are CRAZINESS!! Plus now that Ive seen how hard it is to find yorkies here, I would like to become a small breeder myself. And I think rescue dogs usually arent meant for breeding. Just pets. I want a pet, but to also be able to breed them Also. in our newspaper there have been ads before, but I call, and what do they say but, Im sorry we already sold all of the puppies!! :( |
Good luck on your search! Hope you can find a Yorkie or two soon, then you can supply Ohio with Yorkies. :) |
lizzy ==you better read up a LOT before you think about breeding yorkies.we've been breeding for 15 years and still don't know everything about them .you seem very young, so take your time.if $1000.00 or $2000.00 a pup seems crazy to you. just look all over the net, you'll see its about right. jerry===jer_lin_yorkies |
I am young Im 20- I did find one lady who sells yorkies for $500 not too bad, but she sells them with limited registration. I have been reading up on yorkies for a long time, but I continue to read about them when I find articles or a book I havent read. I owned a yorkie chi, but my daughter and her even though they grew up together, werent getting along, So I found her a good home. I miss her to death. Ill have to post a picture of her. |

You're absolutely right, Jerry! I have friends who bred Yorkies for 20 years, and still happened to breed into PRA (progressive renal atrophy) although the lines were well-researched. Elizabeth, there is soo much to breeding. You will find invaluable information in a book called "The Yorkie Head to Tail." I got it a Barnes & Noble. Good breeders will always take a dog back if it develops health problems. It's a pledge you should be ready to make when you bring living creatures into the world. Learn everything you can, talk to show breeders. If you do this right, you won't make any money. That's the thing about breeding. It costs to breed to healthy, quality stock, and have important tests run. You should have you breeding stock's heart, thyroid, patellas and hips checked EVERY year. The only dog (of 8) that had all of thoses tests done on his parents is the only one who is healthy and happy. I have spent thousands of dollars on vet bills for my poorly-bred Yorkies who were bred by a backyard breeder who bred to pretty dogs without a thought to genetics. Think long and hard about bringing more dogs into the world. You seem like you love animals, and I have no personal interest in whether or not you breed--I'm not a breeder, and not competition, but I do know there is a lot to breeding healthy dogs. Good luck. Btw, a nice breeding quality dog runs from $2,000-5,000. -Victoria |
Thanks for all of the info, thats a book I havent read, I bet I could get it on Amazon, Im not planning on becoming a huge breeder or anything, im not gonna go crazy and breed for no reason- but would like to have some good quality dogs when I do come across enough people that would want puppies. Which I know will be easy to do, because theres just not alot of yorkies around here. I do appreciate you guys' info!!!! Keep it coming!!! Im still on my search!!!!! |
ohio We had been looking for a yorkie for about a year and 1/2 and was visiting our son in Illinois and I got a local newspaper and came across a couple of ads for yorkies. I called one and even tho it took us a couple of hours out of our way we stopped to look at him. The lady was going blind and couldn't take care of him any longer (so she said). He was advertised at 3 lbs. but was 4. He was dirty and badly matted .The second I looked at him I knew he was mine. I consider him to be a rescue even tho that was not the case. Buying him was the best thing I have ever done. He is my baby. Our other one we bought from a newspaper ad also in Columbus, Ohio. She was only 8 weeks when we got her. Being a puppy she has been a challenge but I also don't know what we would do with out her. We called one number in Toledo, Ohio and drove 1 1/2 hrs to see this old man who claimed to show his dogs at one time have who we guestimate to be about 25 or more yorkies in a small house trailer. I so wanted to buy them just to get them out of there. I realized if I paid for just one of those dogs it would only encourage his setup all the more. sorry this is so long . I guess what I am trying to say is check papers and check the situations out and don't be in any hurry to buy. And most of all, I beg you, don't be one of those breeders who only wants money. If we have any born to us I am not sure I can sell any of them. I get too attached. LOL and by the way...........our 2 babies are named "Buckeye" and Ahia Swate" :D |

We are both originally from Ohio. We are also big time Ohio State Buckeye fans. My husband wanted the name brutus. But I would not let him name such a delicate little boy such a rough tough name. His colors remind me of a buckeye. So we agreed upon "Buckeye". He wanted to name the other one Ohio. Sooooooooooo very quickly I came up with "Ahia". and threw in the middle name Swate just to add a touch. Most people think it is indian. I just have to watch my self when anyone ask me where we are from I sometimes say Ahia. I do know what you mean about people wanting a yorkie where there are so few to come by. Seems like every time we take ours into a store someone will say, "If you are ever going to breed them I would love to have one". AND... by the way I love this forum and will add a link on my web page. So much information and such friendly people. I am addicted! ;) |
Glad to hear you enjoy the forum, ldenise! Thanks for the explanation of the names. Pretty creative to come up with Ahia. :P |

Here are a couple of sites I've found useful when looking for good breeders in your area: http://www.shooterdog.com/eastus.htm#OH http://www.ytca.org/breeder3.html#OH Hope this helps! |
I'm from Columbus, OH and just bought my baby from a breeder here. I can give you some names, etc. of breeders I talked to if you want to email me. jbursey@ibeamsolutions.net |
OUTRAGEOUS PRICE! You can breed for less! I know how you feel about wanting to breed Yorkies. The fact that people are willing to pay 1 or 2K for them is absurd. I think that your idea is wonderful!!! You obviously know it is a lot of work no matter what breed you pick. But here in Florida our Yorkies go for anywhere from $350- $850. max! and the people who breed them refuse to sell them for higher-- that is they breed them for the pleasure of companionship, not championship. I think what Ohio needs is someone like you to bring that outrageous price down. The only reason why people get away w/ the higher price is b/c there is no low price, so start one!!! more power to you. Don't let anyone tell you different. I have been looking for a Yorkie and want to rescue one and let me tell you that you can find them cheaper. Go for it!! as a matter of fact, the rescue webites have several in Ohio-- not sure about puppies though. |
There is no way I could sell a pup for 350$ I have that much at least in each pup itself. Not counting what I spend on the dam and sire or unforseen problems. Breeding yorkies isn't cheap or easy. If you can get one for that much they are cutting costs somewhere. Probably care. There are lots of Yorkies in Oh. There are lots of Yorkies needing rescue for a reasonable cost. Anyone who wants a Yorkie should always check out Petfinder.org or any of the rescue sites first. Especially if cost is a factor. |
Diagree I must say once again. I disagree. There are several breeders here in Florida who have been breeding for several years (one of them own a very reputable dog grooming business) and she does not sell a puppy for anything more than $750.00. That is with shots, complete blood tests, docking the tails, etc. She even has an entire "nursery" where she keeps the mother and puppies and she has a live webcam that you can watch and see the puppies at specific times. Yes, it is expensive and time consuming to breed Yorkies, ANY dog for that matter, but it is also a way for not-so-nice people to make a lot of money if the consumer does not know they can get a QUALITY, healthy happy puppy for less. Kepp looking!!! I know you can find something in your price range, unless you want a champion bloodline. Don't be fooled by the price tag. :) Hey, check this out!!!! http://tammispuppies.tripod.com/puppies.html |

I live in Ohio, and I did extensive research and had many discussions with various breeders all over the state for a year prior to purchasing, and there was not a Yorkie puppy under $1,000 to be found from anybody reputable. The back yard puppy mills will sell them for $850 if that's what you really want to purchase, with no health guarantees or anything else. NOT what I wanted. I even investigated many breeders online in other states, just to compare, and again, did not find a registered Yorkie girl for under $1,000. I paid $1,200 for my Gracie, and she's worth every dime and then some. Perhaps I could have paid less buying from a breeder in another state, but I did not feel comfortable paying any price for a dog that I had not seen or interacted with. Perhaps other states such as Florida have an abundance of Yorkie breeders and demand requires a lower price? |
Hello Lizzy, Call your local veterinarian clinics.. They should know the good breeders in your area. BTW, I love your name.... lol |
No, I don't believe we have an abundance. But I think it is more of a Northern and Southern thing. I just moved from VA and I could not find any Yorkies for less than $800.00. I refused to pay that much and kept searching. Thus, when I moved back home I found several breeders , quality breeders for a lesser price, NOT lesser quality or love or health, just people who don't want to gouge the consumer. I agree, I would NEVER by any puppy from someone where I could not observe the environment, observe the litter of puppies and meet with the breeders. So, for obvious reasons, if you live hours away from Florida I would not suggest that. Unless you plan on taking a trip to sunny Florida :) There are puppy mills in every state but I have had Poms, Malteses, Poodles and Golden Retreivers and I have never paid more than $500.00 for any of them and they were all joys of animals. Lesser price does not always mean lower quality. You can not use the words "always" and "never" becuase that is just not the case, in any aspect of life. |
I just want you to know that Mary Elizabeth and the entire YTNR organization have to be the cruelest bunch of women I have every encountered. I surrendered my dog to them on a Saturday and asked for Kaylee back on Sunday. My wife has a medical condition and I thought surrendering Kaylee was the best for all concerned. I quickly learned it had the exact opposite effect on my wife. YTNR has refused to even consider an exception to their policy to let me have our Kaylee back. I have offered to fly to Tennessee to meet with her -- she has refused. I have offered a donation to the organization of $1000.00 to let us have her back. I have offered to let them come visit our house to see where Kaylee lived -- they have refused. I have submitted a doctors report that clearly says my wife's condition would be helped if they would return Kaylee -- they have ignored it. They clearly do not care about my wife's health despite the doctor's recommendation. I haven't found one person yet who could understand the cruelty these people have shown by not returning our dog. One of their own volunteers recommended that Kaylee be returned -- but Mary Elisabeth simply refuses. |
Some breeders won't sell if they feel you don't need one. And will tell you that even if they have a house full. Good breeder don't just sell to anyone. Especially someone showing interest in breeding that doesn't know their stuff. |
I'm in Florida and is not cheap Hi I just have to kind of disagree with Misty, I think it depends where do you live regardless of the state. I live in Florida Naples area and you can not find a Yorkie for Less than $900. I could drive to Tampa and get one for maybe $500. but not for someone reputable, I even try miami area I think $650 was the cut off. I had been doing my homework for a year and still ended up driving a little bit over 2 hrs to get mine and it was over $900. I believe breeding is a hard job. Veterinary expenses, food , and heartbreakes which are price less, I do believe is outrageous to pay over $2000. for a puppy but, I understant breeders when they charge, because it is hard to maintain good healthy puppies. and at the same time there is so many unwanted animals, we can just adop and is cheaper. I guess it depends on a persons choice, pay if you can & want or don't want to & can't adopt. I also believe if they are been breed just to breed and make a quick few bucks why bother. I do want a puppy from someone that is breeding for championship, someone that is breeding to better the breed and not just to have pupies .when I look back at how much I paid for my baby I don't regret it. I have a sweet healthy baby, that was worth every penny & more ;) Is not that I have anything against mix breed dogs, animals are all cute & sweet regardless of pedigree or championships. but when I look some breeders is sad as to why some of them are doing it.. |
Yorkie I live in Liberty Center do you thing that you could e-mail me that info too.TY Heather P.S. this is my 1st time on the boards and i have a 1 1/2 year old yorkie boy that i got from Toledo Ohio.Curently looking to stud him out. |
Exactly how much money do you want to spend on a yorke!!! |
reeser2, I'm so sorry to hear about what happened! Where are you located? You should find someone who is superior to her and talk to them... |
all you guys that live in the Bowling Green, Liberty Center, Toledo area: There is an older man in wheel chair that breeds yorkies. and lots of them. we counted at least 25 in a small trailer just on the edge of Perrysburg. (and he said a lady next door to him breeds yorkies also). I think he advertizes regularly in the newspaper. I found him in the Lima paper when we were looking before we got Ahia. I wish I had called the athorities on him. The place was so filthy. Beware. Just wanted to warn you. He said he used to show yorkies. I can't remember his name or the name of the street. |
