I just want to point out, for people's awareness, how emu oil is made...some people don't realize it's actually from the Emu itself: "Slaughter Emus mature at a relatively slow rate compared to other birds; they are rarely slaughtered before the second year of life. The technique for slaughtering emus is similar to the methods used for smaller fowl such as chickens and turkeys. Trucks carry the birds to slaughterhouses, where machines break the emus' necks. The ASPCA notes that rough handling under these circumstances can cause the animals to suffer from injuries or pre-slaughter death." |
Just heard back from the Emu oil company. Here is their reply. Sounds humane. " When the birds are processed for the meat they are knocked out with a stun gun.* They are hung from tall racks and their juggler vein is cut.* Their hearts are still beating so the blood is naturally pumped from the bird.* It is totally painless for the bird.* This is the same way Kosher Butchering is done. * We are actually growing the birds for the meat, the oil is a by product of the bird.* All parts of the bird are used.* The feathers, the fat, the meat, the hide." I don't know about other companies but this brand is OK by my standards. This is "Blue Ridge" brand. |

I'm 100% vegetarian since 1989 and I ate vegan for 9 years of that stretch. I'm definitely sensitive and concerned about the treatment of animals. If coconut oil was effective, I'd use it, but it doesn't help my little Yorkie. If it works for your pup - that's awesome! |

Yep thats why I dont use emu oil. I think we can get by in life without purchasing emu oil and add to the unnecessary suffering of emus. I used to use minksheen but stopped when I found out minks are killed to make it. Im not a vegetarian and eat meat but I think that is different than purchasing a product for your dogs hair. There are plenty of other products that work that dont involve the slaughtering of animals JMO |

I agree to kill an animal to treat another animal is a bit much, but the emus are killed for their meat, the oil is a byproduct. What I was saying if you eat meat how is the oil different? That is just me.. and I don't know the answer for anyone, not even me at times:eek: If there is a non animal product that works that MAY be the better choice. |
For me it is more why does a emu need to be eaten anyway or their oil used. The elite chinese pay alot of money for tiger parts because its supposed to be medicinal and I think we can all see thats wrong because there are other medicinal things they can use that dont revolve around killing a tiger. That is how I view the mink oil and the emu oil we really dont need it for survival it is a luxury item |
