Docking Tails On Imports For Showing I am having a time trying to decide if I want to dock the tails on my two new imported females I purchased for show.. Alot of show breeders are telling me to dock their tails because most of the judges do NOT like a full tail.. I am having a problem with them being put under to dock their tails at their ages (DOB 7/9/05 & 7/23/05), but if I am going to dock their tails it does need to be done now.. I would like to know your opinions on this subject.. Thanks.. Melanie |
Ouch!!!... |
1 Attachment(s) Exactly what I am thinking! Here is a new picture I just took of Waneska, the one that I believe I will definitely show.. I love her easy going additude and NOTHING bothers her.. Sorry she is not just groomed.. :( Melanie |
I've heard that the judges prefer the tails to be docked. I understand your concerns about having them put under for the procedure but I guess you have to look closely at how bad you want to win. I'm sure that you do since you had dogs imported...something to think about. |
Check with vets in your area. A lot of vets now use a special anethesia for smaller dogs that is safer for them when putting them under. It costs a little extra, but for my own peace of mind, it's worth the money. And if you're planning on showing them...you're really probably going to want their tails docked. It is the standard after all. |
New procedure.. My vet caters to all the show people around the world. He docs tails on older dogs a lot of times. Now there is a less painful way. I believe it's done by Laser. I asked him about it when I was going to buy an import wiht a full tail. That never went through so I can't share my experience but it may be something to look into. |
dock If you want to win you should dock them.. |
Sure anyone that shows their dogs wants to win, but not if I feel that I might jeapordize my females in the process.. I will have to feel 100% comfortable about doing it before I can put them through that.. Thanks for all your help!! Melanie |
tails Of course, you do not want to put your girls in danger..but you posted you bought these Yorkies to show..the standard requires a docked tail, you will not win easily, infact I have never seen an AKC champion with a full tail..so back to square one...if you plan to show, you have little choice but to dock. If you want to forget showing and breed them, then you have a choice. May I be nosy and ask why you bought show potentials with tails? |

With all of your years of experience breeding and showing and your contacts in the show world I am amazed that you would post this question. If you plan to show the females you know what the answer is. With your past work experience of working at the vet's office you know the dangers of docking tails at a later date and the discomfort that it causes the pupppies. That is one of the pitfalls that one encounters with some imports- buyers need to ask to make sure the tails have been docked on the puppies to avoid this mess. That bargain puppy that is cheaper to import ends up not to be such a bargain. Kathy |

Melanie, I remember you telling me you would never import again from a bad experience you had. You were supportive when I shared the import I was considering with you. But you were criticle of others. Just curious what changed your mind. Irene |
Irene, I was critical about the breeder you were going to purchase a girl from because of the fact they shipped a male to me that was at best poor pet quality and he was sold to me as show! The breeder my two girls came from does not sell her dogs to the US much.. I have talked back and forth with her for about 1 1/2 years and have become friends with her and I felt I could trust her.. She did not sell me my two girls from a mint and I felt that if I had to place them in pet homes I would not loose my butt! ;) I feel that I am done right now.. I feel that my program can produce some beautiful yorkies, hopefully for the showring!! Melanie |
Kathy, I can tell you honestly that all the years I have worked for a vet clinic we have SEVERAL times docked tails on dogs that were older then the 3-5 days old and it was never a issue, but it was also not a dog that I have become to love and is a part of my family.. I have also seen yorkies win their class with a full tail.. My girls were NOT so called bargins, they come from excellent lines and from a reputable show breeder!! I take pride in my dogs and their lines and do NOT bargin shop for show or breeding prospects! Melanie |

here is your own quote -She did not sell me my two girls from a mint and i felt that if i had to place them in pet homes I would not loose my butt. That is just what I said- you got the dogs you wanted at a bargain- a good price. You did your homework and make a good purchase. I never stated that you purchased dogs of poor quality or of bad bloodlines. Get the chip off your shoulder. I am not sure why you are acting this way. I have never done anything to you. I stated the facts- you know to win in the ring that you will do better if the tail is docked. You are a experienced show/breeder. You worked at a vets office- you know what is involved when you dock the tail on a older puppy- the anesthetic required and the surgical risks. You have fantastic breeders who live in the same city for you to contact who will tell you the same things I just did. Kathy |
Yes you can be nosey.. I have a beautiful female that I imported over one year ago.. I bought her as an adult and she is of show quality, but was never worked with as far as showing.. I LOVE her quality and her lines.. She has a very nice solid structure, beautiful conformation and is not of fine bone.. The show lady I purchased her from sent me to this lady as she was taking a break from breeding and concentrating on just showing, so she sent me to the show/breeder I bought my two new girls from..
