I'm new Hi, everyone. My name is Sally and I live in Portland, Oregon have a one-year old femal Yorkie named Heather. I am so glad to find this site and hope to learn a lot from you. Sally and Heather |
So easy to learn! I have learned a lot here. I know who I would go to, and who I would avoid. Yes, I would avoid sally |
Steve, that's exactly what I did when the thread took that crazy turn. Gotta consider the source... Maybe we can get a fresh start somehow. It really sucks when the interesting threads go off the rails. |
I am so saddened by the closing of the thread but I want to thank Wylie's Mom for her professionalism and taking care of something she saw going no where unfortunately. At least, it's there and people can take what they read the positives out of it and look past the negative :) Donna |

As I tried to tell you in the other thread. There is a lot of expertise OUTSIDE the Yorkie breed. I have never claimed to be an expert. Quite the contrary. I have had the privilege of having sat at the knee of some true experts and gained enough knowledge to know how much I don't know. Joining this forum to learn about Yorkies ended with where to buy pee pads and what kind of dresses to buy. There are well over 100 AKC recognized breeds where people actually learn about dogs too. Your narrow focus on one breed will only perpetuate the problems I see in the breed today. It's hard to find someone in Yorkies who also knows dogs. This thread constitutes a personal attack on a member out of frustration that I don't accept everything that's said here as expertise, but rather a lot of old breeders' tales and just plain old nonsense. Some healthy skepticism would go a long way in some of these conversations. |
Sally, welcome back. Would love to see some pictures of Heather. Also, since I am into learning all I can, perhaps you can post dome of the names of the experts that have mentored you, what shows and when you attended, how many champs you have produced, and what boards you serve on. Not to go off topic, but as an old guy who was with a grunt unit over 40 years ago, at reunions and talking to others, I am intrigued by the stories from those that were REMF's, serving in Supply, Logistics, MT, and cooks. Why if you listen to them, they pretty much won the battles and have all of the expertise. You can surly have your opinion, but to just start attacking others is out of line. Whatever your mission is, it is out there for all to see. Not an attack on you, just presenting what I have read with my old eyes. You can discuss, debate, have your own opinion, but to single people out is wrong. I simply posted your very first thread here. It is out there, I did not make it up. Read it again, and participate if you desire. Have a nice day. |

It's kind of ironic that you say this thread constitutes a personal attack when your posts in the other thread were just that. No one here has a monopoly on knowledge and if you have any that your own experience has found to be true, then by all means please share it. You could have done that earlier rather that attacking others and it was those attacks that had that thread closed. As you can see, a deaf ear is turned when all one does is lash out at others and it devalues any info you might share. Again, if you have any good info to share, please do and any sources you might cite would be even better. |

My cv is irrelevant. There is no one on this board who is consistently producing quality champions. Having produced or bought and finished one means nothing in terms of expertise except maybe how to fill out an entry and where to find the bathrooms and the best parking spots and even that takes some experience. The people here are cliqueish and clueless and that's my opinion. Take it or leave it. When I joined this forum I had a new rescue and I set out to learn about this new breed. Like I said. All I learned here is where to buy pee pads and dresses. And that there are a lot of big fish in this teeny weeny pond. |
Sally, have a wonderful Holiday season. You get out what you put in. I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but you have no added anything of value. I am glad you rescued. I am sure you are a decent person, just having a bad day. Step away from the PC, and come on back and contribute, not attack. |
i know this will sound dorky, but I tell it to my daughter all the time. what is posted on the internet is written in ink and can not be erased... i hope that everyone can and will truly think about how the things they post will effect other people and they will think twice before attacking, or how they word things which can also come across as attacking, even if that was not the intention. its the Holidays.... cant everyone just get alone???:D:D:D |

Sally….I’m sorry there seems to be a personal vendetta here and I truly wish that I could change it or at least know what I can do to help you through it and rectify it. While I’ve never claimed to be an expert and will probably never be the expert , I’m just a person with an opinion like everyone else. I strive to present the best representation of the breed I can with “structure and movement” as my goal with health being of the utmost importance. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stated this over and over with “coat” being the least of my concern in this breed. While I also strive for the nice dark steel blue silky coat it’s not at the top of my list. You can do a search on my posts and will find many times throughout my time here stating the fact above. I come from horses throughout most of my life and barrel racing the majority of that. So, with that being said I do feel I have a good understanding of structure, movement and conformation ect…as you have to have a horse with good conformation and the right type of legs to scoot themselves around a barrel going at almost a dead run and the horse being able to get his/her legs up underneath them to make that tight turn going around a barrel. You wouldn’t want a real leggy horse to be making those types of turns but yet you need leg for the speed. A nice short back the Quarter horse and the type of leg they also have makes a pretty good barrel horse. But in speed the shorter legs loses precious speed so breeders crossed the Quarter horse with the Thoroughbred horse. I know in the dog world you wouldn’t do this but in the horse world it’s done and accepted. Look at the German Shepherd dog and what they’ve done to their structure and rears? Can you say hip dysplasia? The Shih Tzu is another example of a breed that is not being breed correct. The nose is being breed to short. Look at the English Bulldog can’t free whelp in most cases. You see, I know a little more about other breeds than you might think. I’m also somewhat knowledgeable in the Havanese breed. In my breed take Radar for example, he’s not a perfect yorkie and I’ve never claimed him to be and I can pick his faults and only improve upon them by breeding him to a bitch that has the attributes he does not have like rib spring and maybe a tighter ear set and shorter legs but he has great shoulders and angulation and reach and drive and a great top line. I also, showed a bitch that I finished to her championship and she was a nice bitch and I can’t complain that she got a 5 point major at the Progressive Toy Dog Club in NYC and the judge that awarded her this accomplishment is a very well respected judge in the dog show world and that would be June Penta and little ole me just a simple person in a ring with the pros and the dog I had wins. So, yes I’ve done my nice share of winning with the nice dogs I’ve taken in the ring. I finished Radar by myself and I do have a home bred champion shown from the bred by class and finished rather quickly and not as a puppy but as a young adult. I’m always learning from each experience and will continue to learn every day and every time. So, one on this “pet” forum can either take my advice or opinions and learn from it or they can choose to ignore it, either way it’s their choice and it won’t hurt my feelings in the least. Lots can be learned outside anything. I take my background in horses as a stepping stone into the yorkie world so yes I would agree that things can be learned outside the "yorkie world". :) Donna |

Great post, and I just want to thank you and others who are only on Yorkietalk because you love the breed so much and want to help others! |
Donna, totally understand the Horse Analogy. While I did not frow up around them, as an adult, we have had several. We had a Hanoverian/Thoroughbred Cross that my daughters rode in showjumping. We started out while they were young, with an old Horse that was safe, able to jump 3 feet without stopping, and calm. As they progressed, I made a mistake and got them too much horse in a 6 year old Thoroughbred gelding that spent several years at the track. It was a very athletic but also very high strung, and would sometimes stop. After almost killing them, we then got the cross. The Hanoverian balanced out the Thoroughbred, and they excelled in it, and we sold the horse years later to another family with young riders that wanted a safe horse. Since them I have had several Thoroughbreds at the track here, cost a lot to maintain and run, and was a losing proposition, but had a great time watching them. Also had a couple of middle age Quarter Horses that I kept at a friends barn in a far burb. Now horseless, and just a Dogman! Maxine is far from standard, and we know it. Again, thank you for all the input, your thoughts, and straight speak. I appreciate all you and others have to offer. |

I don't let others get to me because if I can help educate one person I know I've done a pretty good job :) Donna |
I saw the other thread. Attacking another person on breed type? That was just the beginning. Yes, Mary did make a comment about a topline. But as being the person you are, you either didn't have the confidence or the diplomacy to ask about that statement. If the statement bothered me, I would speak up. Mary is first to say why didn't you say something. This isn't about being right. You don't get the purple ribbon for giving out bad information. This is a keyboard too. Black comment: In yorkies where? In my yorkie world there are many. But if you are talking about the vast majority then I will agree with you. The majority doesn't know any dogs. The majority of yorkie people don't know anything about the history or our breed, genetics, breed type, pedigrees, breeding, etc. I could on for days. I feel like your statement was to imply that the yorkie fanciers do not. Is this correct? Red comment:Not enough. You didn't learn any more about the breed today, but you sure told others that you can snap at innocent people. purple comment: Who was it that said practice what you preach? Quote:

I'm here---I'm here :2popkorn: Did I miss the party? |
I guess so. I'm just starting to read the other thread, and wow! It's a good read. I'm on page two and I think I'm learning just a smidge more about showing and what goes into it. I would really love to go to a show where I "knew" (even if just an acquaintance) that could explain to me what was going on. I still don't understand how the ranking system in shows goes, or how points are awarded, but I'd love to learn. And if I may, to the person who said you can't learn much about "dogs" on this site.... well call me straight dumb since I've learned everything I know about caring for my pup on this site. Sure we have a lot of frills, puppy pads, fun, and straight out silliness here but I think I'm a better caregiver for Kaji than I could have ever been without this site. JMHO |

At any rate I'll continue growing in knowledge and this site has helped. Thanks to all. Kendra |
All I have to say about Sally, is "when you think you know it all, you will not learn anything more". Apparently she knew all there was to know except for buying pee pads and dresses. So therefore YT was a waste of her time. |
I think I have learned a little more of what the undercurrent here is all about today. There are a few exhibitor/breeders that generously share their knowlege and experience with those thirsty for it. These same very knowledable exhibitor/breeders are also against commercial and frivolous breeding that does not put the good of the breed above personal greed. That puts them at direct odds with many breeders that try to keep their actual practices a little low key. They don't make a point of publicizing that they do not pre-test, that they breed tiny females, that they cross-breed, use non-AKC registries, don't worry about genetics or standards, don't stand behind their dogs when they come up with genetic conditions, some don't even stop breeding dogs that are throwing problem pups, and the list could go on and on...... These breeders have enjoyed doing business their way. They can even look like "bonafide" breeders with such "cute" puppies. The only thing that stands in their way is PUBLIC EDUCATION! That's right -- tell enough potential puppy buyers what to look for and what to watch out for and you are bound to cut into their business! Let enough YT members know that some are NOT doing things right and their reputations may tarnish. How to stop this? I guess some think attacking the educational sources might do enough harm to enable them to continue operating as usual. So attack they do, and the feud begins.......then others jump on the band wagon to support their friend, family member, or just another YT acquaintenance. I am not saying anything specific about anyone posting here today. Because the actual undercurrent is bigger than that -- it is not one person. It is not one thread -- it is one ISSUE -- the fight against substandard breeding. This is not new, it has been at a slow boil, brewing quietly just under the surface here at YT and throughout the dog world. Luckily it is not enough to tampen down the spirit of this site. It is not enough to diminish the profound affect these experienced exhibitor/breeders have had on so many of us! They have spent so much of their time answering questions, explaining things in simplicity so that we may learn. Luckily it does not take a rocket scientist to distinguish between those that come here to help, build, and instill the right values and breeding practices against those that are just trying to keep the dirty little secrets of unscrupulous breeders quiet and the potential buyers unaware. There may be little flare ups from time to time, but this site continues to be a teaching platform for many. I KNOW it makes the yorkie breeding world better and educates the yorkie pet owners daily! I learned so much and realized how much more there is to learn. The great part about that though is I also know where to continue learning. I'll continue right here on YT! I feel fortunate to have such a valuable resource available! I know of no other place where I can learn so much about every facet of Yorkshire Terriers! In a matter of minutes I can get expert opinions from across the nation, from around the world. I can have questions answered, plans refined, and follow-through reviewed from some of the top breeders of Yorkshire Terriers. I love this place! |
