I was taught to put my brush on the table in case the judge would like to use it but not to brush on the table myself. I wait to brush the dog once it's on the floor with my back turned to the judge. I hustle as I hate to keep the judge waiting. With Ace constant brushing just makes him mad anyway. I had to toss my brush outside of the ring or be excused once when I was showing UKC. I honestly forgot that I had it in my hand. I wasn't going to brush the 6 month old puppy anyway. A lot of UKC judges will let you use bait now; it's posted at the ring entrance. |

Travel or not to shows? - Most people must travel to get the shows. They have a circuit in which the shows are scheduled. I know that Atlanta shows are every Feb. and August. I usually have to travel about an hour to two or three hours to get the the shows I want to participate in. There of course are more shows, but I do not like to travel past that time, unless it was a special show and then I would be willing to travel 5 hours to it (one way). I know the the NY Specialty is longer, but that one is very special to attend and worth the extra time. How many (AKC) shows does it take to finsh a dog - it depends on your dog (quality) and the day as well as its competition. I had one finish in three weekends and all majors but one. I then had several finish in two months due to shows not every weekend, so it took longer because of the show schedule. But then I heard a person tell me just this Sat. that she only had one point on her dog after 4 years of showing it (weekend shows once a month). I know of others that never finished theirs after great attemps to get them finshed, including hiring professional handlers. So it really depends on how nice of a dog you have. |
Why are the divisions scored differently and can you only show in the division in which you live? And what is a major? |

When reading the number of dogs entered last year it says Total 3 1-2-(0-0)-0 What does all that mean? |

Then you can also get totally confused by learning...you can be awarded points of the dogs beaten directly or indirectly. Indirectly meaning if a dog you beat in the ring has beaten more dogs than your own...you receive those points. Points are limited to 5 regardless of how many in the ring or how many another beat. Points are only earned at winner's. All the bitches compete in their age class, all the dogs compete in theirs....from there one is awarded winner's bitch and winner's dog....between those two...one is awarded best of winner's. Clear as mud? lol. It has taken me 1 year and half to figure it out. |

Division 6 is comprised of: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin. In Division 6 it takes 7 dogs for a 3 point major and it takes 8 bitches for a 3 point major. For a dog to become a champion it has to win at least two shows that are majors and those major wins have to be under two different judges. It takes a total of 15 points for a dog to become a champion and those points have to be won under at least three different judges. At a dog show all the males are shown first. There are different class divisions that exhibitors can enter their dogs in like puppy class, 12 to 18 month class, bred by exhibitor class, open class, there are other class beside those. After each class is judged then the 1st place winners of each class come back into the ring to complete for winners dog. The best male is awarded winners dog and is gets the points based on the number of other dogs he beat. After winners dog is selected the judge will select the reserve winners dog but that dog does not win any points unless later the winners dog is found to be disqualified. After the males are judged then the bitches are judged in the same manner. After the class dogs are judged then the winners dog and the winners bitch come back in the ring along with any specials (dogs or bitches that are already champions) and then judge will select Best of Breed, Best of Winners and Best of Opposite Sex. For example if the winners bitch was awarded 3 points based on bitch entries and the winners dog was awarded 2 points based on males entries then if the male was awarded Best of Winners then he would be awarded 3 points instead of 2 since he beat the winners bitch. |
