Sportsmanship - please read I came across this article and while it does not pertain to yorkies specifically, it conveys what showing should be about. Sadly, I feel there is a lack of sportsmanship among many of the breeder/exhibitors in the ring today. Sportsmanship |
Fanatastic article - thank you for posting Thank you so very much for posting this article. Not only does it cover the world of dog showing but the exhibition of horses as well. I would expect that it is a concern of the exhibition of most animals. |

Whenever, anyone is running late prior to ring time, someone is always there to lend a hand.....or to help show......always willing to help a serious newbie. My gosh at the Dallas - Ft Worth Toy Show....a newbie took the points.....you should have heard everyone cheer, including those in the ring.... |

Sady, I don't go to many shows in the Dallas area. I have noticed some unsportsmanlike conduct in our area and it would not be good to go into it on a public board. I just posted the article as food for thought. I love going to shows and the majority of the people have been very friendly and helpful. At times, though, there is tension in the air. It just does the breed no good. |

Please dont take my response below personal as I'm just responding to the orginal post you started :) Yes, you posted the article for good thought so Mary and I wanted to say that we were thankful the Tx/OKC area shows do show good sportsmanship when you stated sadly enough you don't see it within the exhibitor/showing arena and "I" took as in the Tx area and didn't want anyone to think that is the case in this area all the time. And as you just stated you dont' show in the Dallas area so I just wanted to clarify that it's not the case and I"m always in the Houston area and have never experienced unsportsmanlike conduct for the most part. I show all over Texas and again, I just don't see it. Maybe the tension in the air as you call it was someone maybe in a bad mood from something else? We all have bad days maybe that's what was experienced? You may have one bad apple in a group of people but I find your area for the most part geniunely very friendly as they also travel alot in my area :) I do, however, find maybe an exhibitor may be standoffish when they see a newbie isn't very serious about showing or taking advice and not liking it maybe? Maybe the tension you see could also be that someone just may not click with a certain person. And also I've seen shunning due to association with non reputable people. I'm not perfect by any means and yes we all have our little quirks but it's the human nature in us all. I know I"m not liked by some but that is ok with me because I know my true friends and I know how I do things so they can take me as I am or not and that's fine by me. I'm truly not in this endeavor to make friends I'm in it for the passion and betterment of the breed. I know my personality doesn't always click with some and that's ok :) Donna |
I have shown off and on for 25 years in the south (FL, GA, NC, SC, AL) and erveryone I know that I have gone in the ring with are great sports. We congratulated winners as we leave and support one another. I have only been at one show where someone threw away their 4th place ribbon on the ground, showing disagreement with the judge. But other than that, everyone is very nice and supportive. We congratulate one another, make plans to meet at shows, go out to dinner, help with grooming, give tips, share laughs, and support one another in good times and bad. I also saw this going on at the Roving in Memphis when I was there. People actually cried and cheered one another on. Mary and Donna - some of the TX/OK people were at the Roving and they were soooo nice!!! Donna - you were one I met and you were great. So good to see you in person! :-) So not sure what you mean, Bjh. ?? Now if you are talking about tension before ring time, sure that happens. When you show an animal, no matter what kind, you have no way of knowing how they will act. You want your dog to do their best and you to do your best for your dog to get the win. You are trying to get acceptance as to the quality of your dog. You are like a parent and want everyone to like your dog, especially the judge. But the tension goes away after ring time. That is normal. I get so focussed during ring time, I would not be able to tell you who was there. Nothing against anyone, just nervous and wanting to do my best. |
I guess I should have not said there are many exhibitors that display unsportsmanlike conduct but maybe just a few. I have been involved in showing off and on for 35 years and even 35 years ago there were exhibitors that would get mad if they lost and they would not congratulate those that they did not like if they won. I guess some things never change. Donna, you brought up some very good points. I want to make it clear that everyone has been very nice to me. I have met some very nice people. The tension I have observed and heard about is just between different long time breeders/exhibitors. Like they say, you have to be tough skinned to make it in the show world and you have to earn respect. I just though it was a good article. |

Donna, what you said is so true. Many of the congratulations are made at dinner, or parties afterwards, at the hotel and walking by, etc... In the end we all hang out together and appreciate one another - we have a same interest and truly love our breed. Bjh - you have been showing a long time. Maybe I have seen one of your dogs in the past? What is your dogs name that showed and how many champions do you have now? Maybe one of my dogs was in the ring with you in the past - I have two of my yorkies that showed in TX and finished out there. Infact one of my girls won BOW at the Bluebonnet Specialty held in Dallas. The TX and OK are a great group of people, I should know. So nice!! Love ya guys! |
