Bjh - you have been showing a long time. Maybe I have seen one of your dogs in the past? What is your dogs name that showed and how many champions do you have now? Maybe one of my dogs was in the ring with you in the past - I have two of my yorkies that showed in TX and finished out there. Infact one of my girls won BOW at the Bluebonnet Specialty held in Dallas. The TX and OK are a great group of people, I should know. So nice!! Love ya guys!

We use to have a thing within the traveling group.....If your Dog took WD, WB or BOB......you bought, dinner, lunch or drinks.........Never done at a Specialty.....tooo many people.

come to think of it I've don't recall meeting you Barb. Either you showed way before my time, or after I left Texas a couple of years back.....Although, I don't think I'll really ever leave Texas, I keep on going back.

I am fairly new to showing yorkies. It was about 35 years ago that my first husband and I showed St. Bernards. We owner handled one of them to her championship. We also raised beagles for a short while and one that we bred and sold did get her championship. I have been attending shows in our area on and off for the last three years but I still don't have a lot of ring experience. There is so much to learn about yorkies and the grooming end of it. I am still struggling with growing coat. I do have hopes to get more involved in showing some day but I do love just going and watching when I can. My dream is to one day have my own bred by owner champion. I know that won't be easy but I can dream. Hopefully we can meet someday. Right now I mainly go to shows in the Houston area. You do have beautiful dogs. :)

Oh! So, you've only been in the yorkie ring for a short while and down in the Houston area. That explains it then.....I hope showing a dog of your own breeding.

Mary, I have not shown anything in nearly two years but I like to go to some of the local shows to watch. I really enjoyed going to the Houston Specialty. I have a couple of 6 month old girls I am watching but it will be next year before I can show them. Hopefully I will get to meet you some day too. I have met Donna at lots of shows and she has always been nice and helpful.

I have a question, is it acceptable to go up to a judge after the show and ask them why they did not put up your dog?

When we use to show St. Bernards, one of exhibitors would always get mad if he lost and he would go talk to the judge and ask the judge why he did not win. I always thought it was childish and showed he was not a gracious looser. Is that something that is acceptable or common practice.

Thanks Bjh! Yes, yorkies are a lot different than the other breeds. So much can go wrong on a pup as it reaches adulthood and then not finish. I believe it is one of the hardest breed to show.
Grooming is very hard on a yorkies and may take years to learn. This is why some with practice on a nice yorkie and then wehn they have learned how, get a fantastic one for showing. I just have the knack for growing coat, but I have to give the credit to my yorkies since they have great coats. Keep practicing and trying and someday you may get there. It takes a lot of work and determination, but one can do it if they try. Best of luck!

You might want to try and show your 6 month old girls at a few shows now while they are younger. I do this and it really helps them in showing for when they are an adult and ready for those points. It gives them some experience and helps them become aquainted with the ring - its sounds, smells, sights, etc...

In our area there is only one more show coming up this year and I feel they are still too young. They just turned 6 months 3 days ago. I was told by another show breeder to take it slow and to not get them in the ring until they are a bit older. I do plan on getting them out more and start getting them use to different things. One of them is a wild child and the other one is easy going.

Barbara there is a show coming up in Houston in Jan. If you really want to take this serious I'd be taking the girls out soon. They need the ring experience and get use to the sights and sounds of the show ring ect...you don't have to take them out every weekend but it's always helpful to take them out to small shows "like" in your area where the numbers are typically small. I'll be showing in Houston a lot more this coming up year than I have in the past so I'll be anxious to see you in the ring :) Of course majors will be hard in your area so you might have to travel for those. I seriously hope to see you in the rings next year as I'll be your way more this next year :)

You must be talking about Ft. Bend. That is about a 3 hour drive from my house. I have never been to that show. I would love to go to the Conroe show coming up but I know I can't have them trained by then. I need to get busy I know. I do hope to see you more in the ring. Between the high cost of showing and other set backs it has not been easy for me to get out much. You will have to make the Beaumont shows this year. Those are the closest shows to my home and they are always nice shows, just small entries.

I know it is not easy on any of us. I just got a camper for shows, so it would be easier on my hubby and the dogs. Then I have to cost of a camper. But should make our life easier on the trips. It is like bring your home with you. :D
But once you get there at the shows you will be glad you made the effort and expense to go. I like showing my younger ones too, so I have them evaluated. It gives me a clearer picture of how they are developing and not just coming from my own opinion. You ought to go. You will have fun!!

The best training ground is the ring....you can train and train outside the ring......but, the real proof is when you get them in. Anyway, you can't finish in your own backyard and preferect your own presentation skills until you get in the ring yourself....one must travel......

Wow Ft. Bend is about a 3 1/2 hour drive for me. I didn't realize that would be that far from you, oh well....Conroe closes this Wednesday and you could take your girls or at least one of them to that show. Doesn't matter if they are completely trained that's what helps puppies anyway! Expense will be involved any endeavor you get in so that's why you either save for it and do it or just sit back and do nothing. Just talking about doing it won't get ya in the ring at any rate LOL...
