Firt Pet Show-Advice PLZ! Hi ya'll!!! As many already know Lacey was recently in her first pageant and won 1st in the puppy class and 2nd in costume. Well, on Set.7th she will be in her very first "pet show". Now my little girl has been doing very well in her obidience classes as well as agility and for that I am very proud. However, she is after all still a puppy(18 wks.). Can anyone give me tips on what to expect or what I should work on before this time? This is just a smaller show done at the county fair but I am still excited just to have my baby out there. Please help us!

Your little Lacey is a cutie. Congratulations on her pageant wins. What exactly is a 'pet show'? If you can give us a little more information about what they will be judging the dogs on then maybe we could help. Do you know if they will be judging conformation or is it just a fun thing for pets?

I'm really not sure of what they will be judging on to tell you the truth. I called to get information and the lady never could give me a straight answer on anything. She did tell me that is was more of a fun thing to do with our pet's and no "professional's allowed"? Well I'm sure not that. Some day maybe. Anyway, she said the dog's will walk to ring and then whatever else the judge has them do but said no table involved. I'm lost after talking with this lady. Should I just continue to work on the heel and prancing along with basic commands? So far Lacey know's sit, down, stay, crawl, come, leave it,roll over,BANG,and the newest is peek-a-boo where when I say it she run's around my leg, sits between my feet and then looks up at me. Ok I'm blabbin' now. Sorry! Have any advice anyone?

| Sounds like it will be similar to your pagent where it is more cutsie than conformation. They had a pet show at the local fair here and that was what it was all about -- cute and fun. No preparation needed. I did not go but saw the pictures in the paper -- seemed they were mostly all wearng clothing or some accessory. I remember a Boston Terrier in a Top Hat, for instance. Is it an annual event? If so, find someone who has particiapted before, maybe ask at local pet supply stores. I would want to know what can be expected as far as: costuming? tricks allowed? Who is judging? Who will you be competing against (in other words are they grouped by animal, breed, size, age, AKC groups?)? Since I don't think there are any national groups that sanction pet shows, you will just have to find out locally as they can all differ. Sounds like it could be fun and a chance to have your dog get used to being around crowds for when you are ready for a Dog Show.

You might want to call back and ask them if the dogs are supposed to be dressed up. Or you could just take a costume with you just in case. The main things would be just working with her on a lead and getting her walk and trot with her head up. It sounds like she might already do that. One word of caution, that I am sure you already know about and that is to make sure she is fully vaccinated before taking her out. Also, please be careful around those other dogs. I have been at dog shows carrying my yorkie when another dog walking by tried to grab it. Also, be careful on letting her on the ground very much. She could easily eat something that could make her very sick.

Thanks everyone! i called back today and was told is was just for more and more or less judged on cuteness, how to carry themselves, tricks, etc. she also told me I could hold her until it's time to walk or when the judge asks you to put her down for veiwing. I feel much better now and think we can handle this. bjh...Lacey is UTD on all shots and such and I will be holding her except when the judge ask otherwise. dad is also bringing the stroller for when we're done with the show. thank you so much for your advise and concer.
